Re: SF SOUNDWORKS Seeks Budding Engineers for Internship
I happen to know someone who interns at Soundworks. He came from what is now referred to as Expressions College (used to be Epressions Center for New Media). Most of their interns come from Expressions. I was curious as to whether they were actually hiring so I e-mailed SF Soundworks with my resume ...

Re: Fairchild 670
I have the reissue of the 1176 and 2 LA2A's (one original one reissue) as well as the plugins for Protools. They each have a different sonic quality. The plugins sound good and the real things sound good - but they aren't identical. When you press all 4 button in on the real 1176 it sounds nothing l...

Re: grandpiano mic position
Also - depending on the size of the room you are in you may want to consider removing the lid and throwing that 149 up high directly over the piano with an spaced pair over the hammers (watch for phase problems). This will work well with high ceilings or if there is defusion overhead and probably sh...

Re: This shit don't PLAY in L.A. homies
Judging from your demeanor you must have great client relationships. There are some heavyweights on this board (admittedly not me) who could teach you some stuff and humility will get you much further than being a punk. By the way - great music can be made anywhere.

Re: Anybody use this snare technique?
This is called re-amping. Its a technique thats been around for a long time. If you get heavy into mixing and someone brings you a mix where the snare sounds like crap (but is hopefully in the pocket) - this may just be the saving grace. Its like sound replacer before sound replacer. Re-amping can a...

Re: Need help with mismatched sample rates
Protools is pretty good at converting between sample rates (especially in OS X) so I don't think the problem is on your end. You could try creating a new session at 48k and importing your old files into it (they will convert up) and then bring in the 48k vocals. I don't know enough about Logic to kn...

Re: Steve Albini - just watched the vid. WTF??
I came to engineering from a programming background. I must say the digital platform (or protocol if you prefer) does have some serious problems. If you shelve an IDE drive for longer than a year and a half there is a chance that infomation will start dropping. This type of drive needs to be run fro...

Re: Looking for Someone.
I don't know him but I one of the guys in the Fog (Mike Lewis) - they recorded that album in Minneapolis I believe - might want to just call the studio thats credited on the album.

Re: Kick size - 20 vs 22 vs 24
Style of music is a factor of course. Just as a Jazz drummer will often play an 18" - its probably better to record him on an 18". The quality of the kit is the biggest factor. I've recorded a drummer with an 18" kick 22" deep (he built it himself) and it sounded fantastic. We took the front skin of...

newbie looking for pointers...
I've been working as an assistant engineer for almost two years and am looking for anyway to grow my knowledge. What resources are out there to learn without doing? I have access to some nice gear and use it every chance I get but really want to have a larger knowledge base to draw from. Also - I ha...
