Re: Why can't I hear the drums anymore in today's music??!

Here's a theory on why there are no breakout drum stars in the current climate: What does a mega-hit "active-rock" producer want from a drummer? Someone who can play "clean" and on time so when the drum tracks go to PT, the guy who has to chop and tighten up the parts doesn't have to spend the whole...

Re: Equipment you HATE but everyone else seems to LOVE

Mackie HR824's. Weird is the only adjective that comes to mind. I never been able to get comfortable with them in any environment... Another anti-vote for DW. A drummer I worked with mothballed his late 70's/early 80's Pearl kit for a spankin' new DW kit and things were never the same. I almost got ...

Re: What's your favorite Casio?

After destroying multiple CZ-101's, I was blessed with a $100 pre-eBay CZ-1: all the sound of a CZ-101 plus a metal frame, full-sized keys, and "velocity sensitive" keyboard. Of course, it doesn't have the 101's handy guitar strap pegs...

Anybody got a Casio MIDI guitar?

Re: What Did You Work On Today? 12-29-04

I spent the day trying to get a squirrel out of my basement home studio.

I highly recommend the (analog) Havahart Model 1030 Cage Trap.

I do not recommend using a broom and cardboard box.

Re: Alesis HD24/ Using External Clock

I spent a week with a Lucid clock driving my HD24. At some point I convinced myself that I could hear a difference with the external clock but wasn't really sure if it was an improvement. It definitely wasn't like the noticeable change between say, 16bit and 24bit recording. I kinda felt like I have...

Re: Snare on Pavement's Crooked Rain Crooked Rain

Bryce remixed an album I played on...

Everyone always says to get a good mix you can't mix loud but Bryce would work at some pretty intense levels at the time and the mixes wound up sounding great...

Re: Snare on Pavement's Crooked Rain Crooked Rain

As an eyewitness to a Bryce Goggin "rescue" mix session circa 94, I can provide a bit of information about a couple of drum fixes I saw him perform: Upon discovering that the master tracks did not include a separate bottom snare track, he did send the original snare signal to an Auratone placed on t...

Re: good drum room chicago area

Pogo in Champaign is very nice. Also, Great Western Record Recorders has a great live room, it's in Tolono, IL, just outside of Champaign.

Re: Best Cassette multitrak?

The mere mention of the Yamaha MT44 has caused me to delurk and create a login. An amazing machine. I went to Guitar Center to buy a Fostex and the sales guy convinced me that the much more expensive Yamaha was a better choice (I was still in high school and hadn't yet learned to properly defend my ...
