he's also missing half of what the improvement would be... 44.1/16 vs 96/24 not only has the higher sampling rate, but the extra 8 bits make a difference too... 65k steps in your dynamic range versus 16 million steps... Common misconception - those extra data points exist, but only below -96dBFS (t...

Re: Mastering Software - what do you use?
Sonic is Mac only.
Sadie is PC only (runs on any PC).
Samplitude & Sequoia are PC only and I love them (as a former 7 year Sadie user).

Re: inexpensive mastering anyone?
Bob, Excellent points! Have you had 1X glass that resulted in worse sounding masters? You can call me Brad. No, the point is assuming that it's better simply because you've 'heard anecdotal evidence' seems a bit silly. FWIW, the speed at which the GM is cut doesn't affect the sound, ime, assuming t...

Re: inexpensive mastering anyone?
I think CD Architect is the only software on the PeeCee that's worthy of serious PQ-based CD writing. I'd argue that Sadie and Sequoia offer at least as much, if not more.. I've also heard anecdotal evidence (more than once, but now I'm blanking on my sources) that real-time glass masters are bette...

Re: inexpensive mastering anyone?
Believe it or not, the error rate and a program like Toast simply do not make a master of the 'highest integrity'. This is incorrect. The hardware/media determine the error rate, software has nothing to do with it as long as it passes the data cleanly. Granted, I don't use Toast, but not because it...

Re: Is anyone using a Word Clock with a Digi 002?
A better quality clock source will be valid regardless of the quality of your converters. I'm sorry, but I think this is bad advice. Try it out in your setup, sure, but one of the reasons that converters like db Tech/Lavry, Crane Song, Prism, etc sound so good is that the internal clocks are fantas...

Re: CD Duplicator REJECTING MY CD MASTER?!?! Help!
Audio content cannot cause plant rejections, short of 'overs', which plants don't seem to care about anymore. Most likely the original disc was rejected as the pre-track one gap was longer than 3 secs (redbook standard) - some plants will not replicate anything outside of redbook. It could also be t...

Re: tips for making a mix to be mastered?
It sounds simple, but there are no 'tricks' - make it sound as good as you possibly can using whatever tools are necessary. The only thing(s) to avoid are anything that is done for loudness' sake (ala peak limiters like L1 or L2) or 2 buss processing if you aren't sure of your monitoring environemt ...

Re: DSD......anybody???
Actually, Universal announced about a year ago that they were going to use SACD as their release format for hi-res stuff, and I think Warner is also on board. Security is the main issue - SACD can't be 'ripped'. DVD-A looks to be essentially dead. Of course, the dominant format right now is DVD-V. B...

If you're building a passive control, 50k is way to high - you will probably be able to hear the roll-off of the high freqs. You need to buy/build something in the 5k range...

Re: Sterling, ENOUGH ALREADY!
While it's on record that I agree with the thoughts of this thread, I think it only fair to point out that not all of the Sterling engineers have joined 'tha mafia'. Greg Calbi is a good example of someone who generally cuts records to sound good - but you'll notice he has kinda dropped off the rada...

Re: Sontec EQ models
FWIW, my old Sontec has never bit it, though I do have extra line amps hanging around just in case. Other than the line amps, the only things that can go wrong are pretty easy to replace, and I know of at least two guys now making replacement line amps. You might have to be a bit of a daring soul to...
