cables to allow a guitarist to be far from the amp

Suppose you wanted to record a guitar player but wanted him to be in a different room from his amp. Why? Maybe so that he can monitor on speakers instead of headphones, or so that he can be in the control room with you to better communicate punch ins while his amp is in the studio. But you don't wan...

You can make it work. Blood Sugar Sex Magik from Red Hot Chili Peppers features an SM57 on the kick--apparently it was just the mic Rick Rubin had handy.

"Bernadette" for the bass line and esp. "Seven Rooms of Gloom" from The Four Tops-which has a lot of bizarre suspensions "Reflections" is a great Supremes track, as are "Crying" and of course "Stop in the Name of Love", which I guess has been overplayed a bit, but is a genius piece of songwriting an...

Take these other suggestions, as in this case I think they're probably correct, but let me take this opp to say that sometimes an in-tune bass can sound out of tune in those cheap headphones from Best Buy etc. that are constructed to emphasize the low. I don't know the science behind it, but it caus...

Don Juan Dracula and cheese

I just found this band Don Juan Dracula on Myspace. They're from Norway, but I think are gaining some exposure in the US, although they've never played a show outside their homeland. www.myspace.com/donjuandracula This music is cheesy, but I love it and can't stop listening. How does one reconcile a...

Adding to that list-in order for a band to be successful, they must always visually "rock out" on stage. I'm all for rocking out, and watching it, too, but constant movement limits what a band can do live musically. For example, which is easier to play while jumping around, a boring bar chord or a c...

Have you heard the story about the British Parliament singing Don't Look Back in Anger back in the 90s? Just kind of phenomenally, spontaneously broke out with it. I think other songs on that disk, Champagne Supernova and Wonderwall are actually proof that good music like you've described has been o...

wanted: mastering for thick arrangements

I'm nearing the home stretch on a recording project and helping the band find a mastering engineer. They're open to anyone in the U.S. and are wondering if someone could make a recommendation- The recording is very dense with a lot of overdubs. Lots of synth and guitar leads doubled and harmonized. ...

Re: Ever developed self-discipline? (...starting from zero.)

I oscillate between disciplined and not so. What helps me is to understand whatever it is I want to accomplish in very clear terms. When I find myself to be undisciplined, often I can trace it to not really wanting deep down whatever it is I would attain by being disciplined. Another way to look at ...

Re: Dress Shirts for a small man

Try to find a uniform outlet store. These sizes rarely change because the goal is not to "flatter" fat shoppers by lying about what is a S, M, L etc., but instead to outfit workers properly. The shirts might have weird ass loops and shit on them.

Re: for anyone who has non-music jobs

The way I've always looked at it is that without time away from music, there's nothing for me to write music about. Unless I'm going to write music ABOUT music, which just results in crap like I Like that Ol' Time Rock n' Roll or whatever by Bob Seeger and his Silver Bullshit Band.
