Re: I need some new music to listen to...

Camera Obscura Pinback Azure Ray Decemberists (all off of the internet radio station "indiepoprocks") i've heard pinback, azure ray, and the decemberists... i dig them all, and they're all doing pretty well these days, with quite a bit of attention (decemberists opened shows on the last pixies tour...

Re: Is a 4-track cassette the center of your home studio?

i've got a 244 in unbelievable condition. one owner who bought it, messed with it for a day and put it back in the box for 20 years. sounds great. i have actually been recording my new record on it using an outboard pre with phantom so i can use condensers, and going in through the aux rtn to bypass...

Re: new to tape....

the 388 is a great machine... much better fidelity than a 8 trk cassette deck... although the thin 1/4 inch tape it uses might soon be hard to find... not sure.
good luck

Re: 2 track vs. 4 track

OK- so the wider the tape the better. If i want to warm my digital stereo mixes, and i have say a 22-4 (4-track) , if i run the left side of my digital mix to track 1 and 2 , then the right side to track 3 and 4 ........then the result would be the same as using say a 22-2 (2 track)....right? or am...

Re: I need some new music to listen to...

comfortstand.com is very cool. great concept. i checked them out a while back and felt like such a capitalist bastard for selling my music. made me want to get a real day gig so i could just give my music away and be "pure"
... it passed

Re: Cheese again

true objectivity is impossible when it comes to music (or any art). it's hard to say whether we have some innate sense of what's "good" or whether it's a product of what is ingrained in us to consider "proper". some hear beauty in thelonius monk, while others hear "wrong" notes in his melodies. if s...

Re: Tascam 424 MKII, $100, good deal?

yeah, go for it... probably the best of the relatively recent 4 trk cassette decks. if you can find a 246 in good shape, that's a great machine (for cassette format).

Re: Cheese again

i agree, context and relativity have to be taken into consideration. interesting topic... has my head reeling around all kinds of perceived objectivity in regards to music and why something sounds "cool" and something sounds "cheesy". when you interject a pedestrian "cheesy" phrase into an "odd" som...

Re: YOU'RE the engineer, what would you do?

i agree with chet, a coated ambassador is the standard in my experience... a little ring does make the drum feel more present and open in the mix. if it is overbearing on a particular drum, just wrap a couple quarters in cloth or duct tape and make a little pad that you can tape down on one side at ...

Re: Articulate Live Vocal Mic?

If that's the case, then wait until you hear your voice through an SM7. Try that through a nice neve or api type pre in the studio...... later, m i'm talking about live vocal mics here... one that i can drag around with me on 200 shows a year. i know there are lots of other choices, and i've heard ...

Re: Articulate Live Vocal Mic?

thanks, i'll check out the audio technica. i like at's generally. love the 4050. there are quite a few newer stage condensers out there, and i'm gonna go try them all out in the next week if my local shops allow that sort of thing. i'll report back what i find. call me crazy, but in the meantime i'v...

Re: songwriting is hard

Somebody once asked Keith Richards what the secret was to writing a good song. 'There's no secret', he replied. 'You don't write 'em. They're already written and the angels have got them. You just reach up and pull one down. The trick is knowing where to look.'
