One day left...

One day left on this isolation rack. If you have noisy computers or anything with fan noise you should take a look. Still a good deal if you include the cost of freight shipping. Since it is a flight case, it's perfectly suited for freight pickup.

Soundproof exterior glass door

To pass inspection on construction of my recording room, I will need a glass door (to meet natural light requirements in a finished basement). Where do people get the heavy doors that are almost all glass? Basically a big plate of glass with a frame around it. I've been to a bunch of home-centers, l...

tech question - Need help finding the correct pots

Got a Demeter Series H tube mic-preamp, but the pots are really scratchy, noisy and even if I find a setting that works, I get a little "ffffT" noise every once in a while. I think I can handle replacing them myself, but need help finding the right pots. I got some great help over at PSW, just tryin...

Keepin' the ol' tape machine a-rollin'

Why "NOT spring" ??? Amazing what it can do for a vocal, especially layered with a little tape slap and some digital verb, all used with taste. Can be really good. Hey now! I like the sound of this.. Any chance you would give a quick, general guideline for this technique? With all of the varied pos...

Re: Hi-quality problem regarding snare

Be glad that you still have the option. When my band was being recorded a while back, the engineer committed to putting both mics on one track. I wasn't pleased with the results. Now that I'm doing some recording myself, I always try to leave the option open. Someday I hope to be at the level where ...

Re: Need suggestions for studio drum kit

Yeah, take a look at the Pacific kits. I like the Pacific shells (either one) a lot more than the Stage Custom. I prefer the hardware from Yamaha, but it's not as much of an issue if the kit will be staying in one place most of the time. Of course, a well-kept vintage kit from one of the greats (Lud...

Re: BB option for syteks

I just feel kind of sick inside when people start discussing which IC chips have the most pleasing distortion. There's something not right about it. Sorry, I know it's wrong... But, hey...so is sticking a pencil into a guitar speaker! Just trying to get some fun use out of some old gear I have. Not...

Re: BB option for syteks

i think distorting ic is a matter of taste so i wont go there.. Oh, absolutely. I'm sure the thought of making anything go "KKKKKHHH" on purpose would make some folks cringe. I just wonder if it hurts anything to go full-on distorto? I mean, actually harm the ic. (I'm sure it would hurt certain ear...

Re: When you say: "Hit", I say: "How hard?&am

What do you mean by "hitting them hard"? "Hitting them hard" means cranking the gain up so your pushing the input close to its maximum potential, which causes the premp to "break up" or distort. Aha! Thanks, I get it. And now I know not to fear the peak light, too. Awesome. Guess I should've known....

When you say: "Hit", I say: "How hard?"!

Okay, guys. I have Syteks, both with and w/out the BB chip, and like them a whole lot. Please oh please enlighten me.. What do you mean by "hitting them hard"? I know about hitting a drum hard, hitting a compressor hard, hitting tape hard..but the only thing before the preamp is the mic! Does this m...

Re: Pro Tools 6.1 nudging on a laptop

Yeah, this one stumped me for a little while, too. Here's how it works on my powerbook: Press the function key (lower left corner "fn") while using the semi-colon key that has a minus sign on it, and the question mark key that has a plus sign on it. It's probably some slight variation of this combo ...

Addiction? What addiction?

Mostly cheap-o, girlie-man, student models, but there are some gems in there, too. Yes, I have recorded with every one of them..except the lap steel. Still trying to figure out how to play that thing. The dumbest thing about this list? I am a drummer. Squier Precision Bass (cik, ssc, sb) Squier Prec...
