Re: Albums you missed the boat on

Now, if only I could again appreciate Pink Floyd... It took me YEARS to get into Pink Floyd. I hated them in high school, but I was into punk and hardcore. At the time I thought I'd listen to DRI forever. As I write this I'm having a Brian Wilson night, having listened to Smile and now Pet Sounds. ...

Re: The new SMiLE available online (legitimately!)

It is finally out. I just got it and am listening to it now. It is pretty amazing. I was really afraid that they'd ruin it by redoing the whole thing, but it sounds great. There are places where Brian sounds very different, but it is really excellent nonetheless.

Re: Albums you missed the boat on

both quicksand albums I had to go back to these later to appreciate them. At the time I had their 7" on revelation and thought it was one of the best things ever. They're great live. The albums seemed weak to me at the time. I heard songs from them recently and really like them. I especially like t...

Re: Albums you missed the boat on

DITTO! I'm a big dipshit because when I got it, I thought it was recent. I told a friend that "this is the first time in a while that I've been THIS excited about a NEW record"... he said, "uhh...... dude, that came out about 6 years ago." I initially thought the same. They were playing a couple so...

Re: Radio Signals & Interference

All of the speakers (except my monitors) in my apartment go wild when this one person or vehicle goes by. It is almost the same conversation every time. It used to scare the hell out of a former roommate. For some reason he thought the police were listening in...to what I'm not sure. My amp also pic...

Re: Albums you missed the boat on

Neutral Milk Hotel. I love 'in the aeroplane over the sea". It isn't incredibly old (it was recorded in 97 or so) but I just "discovered" it about 6 months ago. I even bought it twice - on vinyl and from itunes. Sonic Youth. I had always found them too chaotic and noisy. I've been listening to 'goo'...

Re: How to evaluate a Board (or Preamps) ?

I think the real value of the preamp is how it makes things sit in a mix..mackies can sound fantastic on a song with two or three tracks..but use them to do a rock mix and you will quickly hear why people say they suck..they have a "scummy" buildup of nasty frequencies over many tracks that is not ...

Re: Trying to find drum riser "floor decoupler"

I bought 2 sets of the rubber mats used in weight rooms/gyms and double layered them. I found them at a sports supply store. They work well and the 2 sets cost only $80. They also hold the drums in place without using any kind of weight since the spurs dig into the rubber.

Re: Animals in the studio

My "studio" (well to be honest, apartment with several rooms devoted to instruments and recording gear - and I only really record myself and some friends) has a pair of cockatiels. The greatest thing we've found about them is that they are excellent music critics. We found out that they love Led Zep...

Re: Practicing on your own

I've been doing this myself and recently starting using a digital camera to try to document (in addition to my notes) what I did. I plan to have a folder in my computer containing the pics and my notes and soundclips so I can eventually compare the results and hopefully be able to repeat whatever I ...

Re: Rude pro audio dealers

Thanks Joel, I purchased 2 of the on-stage hex base stands hoping that they'll work better than what I have. Fletcher seems impressed by them enough to put them on his site and sell them, so I figured I'd give them a try. Worst case, they still don't work and I try the sandbag/ricebag solution by at...

Re: Rude pro audio dealers

Just had a lovely experience at Sam Ash this past weekend. I was looking for overhead mic stands, and while I'm not totally against spending $250+ for each, when I explained to the guy at SA that I wanted something between the $40 stands that I have and the expensive Atlas ones. Just being the goof ...

Re: How do you get over being burnt out?

"The painting has a life of its own, I try to let it come through." Jackson Pollack is the guy who I've seen it attributed to. Hope this helps. This is a corny anecdote, but when I was much younger, I asked the same question of Vic DiCara (guitarist from Inside Out, Shelter, 108, etc.) what he does...
