Re: I think I just scored...
A thinner head yields more resonance with complex overtones....to me that is warmth. You can definitely tune them to a varying range, they need not be timbale in pitch. I personally have never used hydraulics or pinstripes on my own kit, that's because I've never heard a kit I liked that used them! ...

Re: I think I just scored...
What variation of the Renaissance would help me achieve the sound I'd like? I've seen Renaissance Ambassador, Emperor, and Diplomat heads, and they all look good. These determine head thickness. Diplomats are thinnest (7 mil), then Ambassadors (10 mil) then Emporer (2 7 mil plys). Unless you're pla...

Re: I think I just scored...
If you play with a light touch, use single ply heads. Try the reniassance or maybe coated ambassodors on top with a clear ambassador or diplomat on bottom.
Of course tuning is the name of the game no matter what the head. If you haven't yet, read that Drum Tuning Bible, it's spot on.

Re: I think I just scored...
I would go Remo all the way, either Fibreskyns or Reniassance. The sound you are looking for as you described has nothing to do with oil. Hydraulics are "dark" for sure, but more in the muffled way. Think late 70's very very dry toms with no sustain. Tell me an artist drum sound as an example and ma...

Re: how do YOU do MONO drums? ? ?
I really started thinking about mono drums more when I realized that the latest Fiona Apple record is filled with them and I think the drums on that are about as perfect as you can get. It does seem to give more room for other things to exist.

Re: PT LE's analog outs. Am I crazy?
I use the converters on my Central Station via SPDIF from an 002. The difference is slight, but noticeable enough. I've heard the 001 converters are much worse than the 002, so that very well may be the culprit.

"Scene" is comprised of a bunch of Slipknot wannabes. I can count the decent rock bands doing original music on one hand. Studios are few and far between and mainly cater to metal bands. Hence, I record at home and mainly play shows in Omaha or Minneapolis.
