Can you turn up the room mics in the sections where the clapping in harshest? Maybe some discreet reverberation will help...

I would have said to work at frequencies between 100Hz and 300Hz to get rid of boominess. That's where I have to watch out for it. For me, not so much in the sub bass, really.

I've had good results with 4038s and 67s. I like the room mics to be stereo. And, in my experience, good live room acoustics are a key factor.

If reverb is going to be added to a track I like to hear it as soon as possible while mixing, as reverb affects the instrument's perceived level in the mix. Same goes for room mics or delays.

We use our live room and stairwell as chambers for almost every mix. It's true you can do it with any room but the better the room sounds, the better the effect will be. The typical chamber sound is predelayed with tape. It sounds gorgeous (beats any reverb i've heard). If you don't have a tape mach...

I installed the transformer into a mexican 57. It became a usable mic. I guess "closer to an sm7" would be a good description. It still looks like a 57 though...

Topic: Tom mic: MD421 or 441?

I like 421s (specially the older ones) but not really on toms. I find them very hard to place as they are "end fire" and pretty huge. To me they always sound a little to "woofy" in that application and, depending on the drummer's set up, it's almost impossible to use them to mic near the rim and per...

Hmm, m160's for GJ... I would have never thought to try those. I figured they would be to directional. I gotta try those! :) You guys doing any compression or anything to the 2 OH mics? I generally like them uncompressed, maybe a touch of EQ (especially the Fatheads, the Square State EQs have been ...

I like 4038s for Glyn Johns a lot. However, sometimes the proximity effect can be overwhelming if you want the sound to be dryish. M160s are slightly less spectacular, but generally more useful. I bought another pair of M160s so I wouldn't be torn between using them on drums or guitars.

I always try several microphones. Dynamics and ribbons often "beat" the more expensive condenser mics. I agree with the sm7b. I've had great luck with it. Also with white 421s and re20 (specially, female vocals for the EV). I like to know the band and the singers opinion. They usually have important...

Sometimes mono piano is what works best with the music. Indeed! I've always found pianos one of the hardest instruments to record I had difficulty with pianos too but that was before I started using a ribbon. I know what you mean, ribbons can be very effective in capturing certain elements of the a...

I'd suggest you try again from the back as I've also had good results miking upright pianos this way. I have mine on two mats to be able to carefully slide it easily into position on the hardwood floor (my piano tech ok'd this). From the back I get less noise from pedals and what have you, the sound...

Loud cymbals can be a problem. I've found that usually, it's cymbals that sound too bright (for the way the drummer plays, of course) that are really the cause of the problem. Loud dark cymbals tend to give cymbal heavy drum mixes but don't get in the way of guitars and vocals (as much). It is alway...
