Yea I wrote him a nice long email explaining the situation. Then last night my band had a gig on campus sponsored by AES (which he is the faculty advisor for). So I said hi we got to talking and i asked if he had gotten my email. He hadn't so i just kind of quickly explained the project again. He ha...

Thanks again everyone for your thoughts so far. I am loving this. I talked to my roomate and sent him the link to this post so he could read your suggestions as well. I am going to be emailing the recording department head right after I write this post and basically beg for his help. We really have ...

Thanks for the ideas guys. I was kinda floating along the same lines as both of you. A more general "ensemble" approach might be best. But some of those spot mics are going to be pretty important after listening to the rehearsals (balance wasnt that great). I was also trying to think about the set u...

Help recording an orchestral jazz album
So I am in need of a little help, or maybe just some creative ideas. I am a bit overwhelmed. Here is the situation. My roomate's jazz quartet has written a really cool work that involves 4 movements. Each one is written by a different member of the band. Each member has his own small set of themes t...

Hey, not sure if it is what you are looking for (since you already have a BA) but I am going to Lebanon Valley College in Annville, PA for Music Recording Technology and I like it a lot. Its about an hour from philly. It is actually a Bachelor of Music with an emphasis in Music Recording Technology....

Looking for internship suggestions in/around Philly area
Hello All, This summer I need to get an internship in the audio industry. I have been looking around online for some possible studios to contact once I get my act together with a resume and demo CD and such. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for studios to look at. I guess I am look...

As for compression, well this is a necessity just the same. I recall a story along the lines of an engineer who was told by a pianist to not use compression, and he replied, 'certainly - as long as you don't use your sustain pedal'. What a brilliant analogy. I love it (and may use it one day, who k...

Joel, just wanted to say what a great post. I am starting to get into a lot of Tonmeister stuff here at college. I have been doing a few recital recordings for outside clients on my own and this stuff really fascinates me. It was also refreshing to hear about the MUSIC for the sake of the MUSIC and ...

Re: Anatomy of a live concert recording session
Yea, I was thinking I would really have to have a tricked out laptop to be able to record a good hour straight of audio and not have it die on me. The minidisc's are pretty cool. The new Hi-MD players take 1gig minidiscs so it can hold about an hour and 45 minutes worth of lossless audio. I just nee...

Re: Cool XY and AB micing techniques
I am also interested in something someone brought up here before once, but I can't find it again. Someone mentioned using a matched pair facing so their diaphrams are angled 180 degrees (so they are facing hard left and right with the diaphrams aligned) Then using this as a DIY figure 8 "mic". This ...

Re: Anatomy of a live concert recording session
Yea man, awesome post. Some great tips. I too am thinking about trying this out to make some extra cash, or even just for the experience. However, my gear is very limited. I just bought the NT5's you were talking about for the very same purpose (and as a general stereo pair for overheads, ac guitar,...
