I'm using a Radio Shack unbalanced to balanced xfmr, works great. Maybe your speaker is bad? Try running some signal through it.

Transistors usually have their name printed on them (2N4401, etc.). Find it and do a google search to get the data sheet. They also usually have the name or logo of the manufacturer and a date code, so it can be a little tricky.

It would give you a lot of tonal variety so I'd say definately worth trying out. Just buy it from a place that you can take it back if you don't like it.

I have the Sansamp BDDI and would highly recommend it as a di by itself or as a stompbox in front of an amp.
