Re: working during emotionally draining personal crap

Hey! I'm going through that right now! I'm in the midst of some serious, heavy personal crap right now and I'm mixing a project, starting another one (crap band, too - but great cash), doing live sound at the club and rehearsing/recording my band. And it's the winter doldrums, too. Mostly what I ten...

Re: What prod. techniques (that you do, or have done) just s

My bad - saying, "Oh, it's just a scratch vocal, I'll put up the crappiest mic I have, 'cuz we're gonna fix it later"... then spending way too much time trying to get the singer to get the magic take that he/she got the first time around, but was recorded poorly.

I don't do that anymore.

RME preamps?

Can anyone give me an opinion on RME preamps? I've been hearing about them lately and I know they make a 4-channel that I might wanna check out for a mobile rig I'm putting together. Are they decent or should I just forget it. Also, I know I'd have to hear them myself, but I also like to hear what f...

Re: Recording your band.??..

I've been recording with my band for 6+ years now, so I know the other players' sounds pretty well and can typically just set it and forget it. Most of what we do is trial and error - I set up mics, get sounds, we play, then I go back and listen then tweak and repeat that process until we're all hap...

Re: The New Cure album

Yeah, when I first put the CD on - I noticed it sounded weird. I remember saying to a friend that it sounded like it was recorded on ADATs... sure enough, I looked in the liner notes much later and saw it was true! Crunchy, crunchy stuff. Want - ooh, so good. The 13th - mmmm, I challenge anyone who ...

Re: Vocal settings for ART Pro VLA

Yeah - when I said squash it - I meant setting the threshold really low and then bringing up the make-up gain to... uh... make-up the gain. As for hitting my DAW, well, I don't have one and I'm usually doing this as an insert while I'm mixing or sub-mixing to another track. The slight comp settings ...

Re: The New Cure album

Gotta chime in as I'm a massive Cure fan... so much, in fact, that I'll go out on a limb and say that there isn't a Cure record I don't like. I naturally just assume Smithy has total control over the recording - from how songs are structred to how they're mixed and mastered. I think it's supposed to...

Re: Vocal settings for ART Pro VLA

The great thing about the VLA is - you can keep it tame and un-noticable or you can crank it and make it really apparent. I use both quite a bit... tame vocals - 2:1, auto attack and release. I usually only hit it for 1 or 2 db compression. squashed - 5:1 to limiting, fast attack and auto release. H...

Re: How often do you track without using any EQ?

I almost always EQ to "tape". If I like a sound, I'm gonna print it and live with it. Having said that, most of my EQ-ing is subtractive, but with guitars, if it's a particular sound I'm after to fit into the mix, I'll get a little extreme. Vocals - rarely ever EQ'd at all, to tape or in the mix (if...

Re: Buying a new computer and interface - help?!

That's what I was afraid of. Lemme ask this - since 8 I/O seems to be the norm, is it possible to dump 16 tracks (8 at a time) then line them up once they're all in? Or, is that a real hassle?

Buying a new computer and interface - help?!

So, for the past 5 years, I've been using a PC (pentium 2) with a Gadget Labs 8/24 into Cool Edit Pro or Sound Forge. Basically, I have enough RAM and ROM to do diddly. Now, I'm recording other people more than myself and it's getting a little embarassing... I need to upgrade. I'm not a computer guy...
