Re: Reverb Help

If you've already used this technique then please disregard my post. But once I started using the "Abbey Road trick" I realized I don't need so many flavors of reverb at all.

Re: How To: Replace an 8-Track R2R with a Laptop

My "assertion" is based on two things: Manufacturers recommendations, of which you see one above, and yes, personal experience, over 20 years of it PROFESSIONALLY. If that is not good enough for you, then go ahead and record audio onto your system drive. (When it fails, and it will) what will you d...

Re: How To: Replace an 8-Track R2R with a Laptop

You do not want to record audio into your system drive, as it will shorten its life significantly. Cheers What makes you say that? Over 20 years professionally recording onto disc drives. Reading the manuals for pretty much every single DAW platform that exists. Witnessing several clients destroy t...

Re: Equality, Equiibrium, what have you!! EQ plugs..

I recently went on a big search for a nice clean EQ that didn't have phase issues and didn't muddy up the original signal just by being plugged in. No, all EQ's are not the same. The only plugin I purchased was the Waves Helios Kramer HLS Channel. I wan't looking for color but the Helios thing just ...

Re: Tube pres that function like Altec 1566A or 1567A?

Bringing this back from the dead. I’m looking for that wooly warm tube driven sound for a bass preamp. I’d love to get a 1566 but due to current scarcity and prices I’m not sure if it’s feasible. So anyone have anything else they’d like to add? People still digging those EHX12AY7 preamps? I use my ...

Re: How far have interfaces come in the past 10-12 years?

Well, I have a decent middle class job so I go out and get a UAD Apollo 8. Congrat's on your new Apollo 8. I would love to hear what you think of the preamp emulation and particularly the ability to change impedence and gain structure. I imagine that being able to change gain structure is a game ch...

Re: Speaking of 7506's

Funny, my 7506's started doing the same thing at the same place. My (much cheaper) AKG K44's, on the other hand, have had no problems with the wiring at the plug and don't look like they ever will. I dumped the 7506's a few years ago in favor of the much flatter response of the K44's. The 7506's are...

Re: How far have interfaces come in the past 10-12 years?

I'm of the opinion that digital interfaces have come a long, long way in the past 10 years. My Audient iD14 is the closest thing to sounding analog that I've ever heard. Nice, clean, usable pre's and Burr Brown op amps make for a pretty decent analog console sound that's open in the top end and smoo...

Re: Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue (Recording Vocals)

To me it sounds like a lot of compression on the vocals, slap back delay, and the mids are a little scooped.

The overall mix reminds me a lot of Elton John's "Captain Fantastic" record. Guitars, drums, bass...very similar to my ears.

Re: Tube rolling 2018

For preamps: I've always found JJ's to be reliably good. JAN Philips 12AT7's always good. Lately I've been very impressed with Psvane 12AX7's and 12AT7's. The sound is "hi-fi". To my ears they have less distortion than my RCA's, Sylvania's and GE's. Psvane's cost more, but they are well worth it IMO.

Re: gain staging. need help

So much great advice has been given here. Great reading. FWIW I feel there's a big issue with not being able to tweak your mix on monitors/speakers. Headphones are a great way to get started on a mix and set up some of the more time consuming mix tricks, but ultimately nothing translates well straig...
