I'm currently mixing two records on a 2011 Macbook pro. It got a new logic board free last year which means I'm hoping it'll last until at least 2021, unless an Apple OS update bricks it. I have a BLA-modded MOTU 828mk2 that still sounds great. I don't use it much but when I do, no problems. I bough...

Gain Stage Fix for DAW Mix

Yes, it rhymes. I got overzealous and have a few DAW mixes that are too hot. But I like the mixes and don't want to do a total do-over. It seems like the easiest fix would be to insert a utility gain plug on each channel and drop it, say 5-6db to restore headroom on the main bus. Am I right that the...

Thanks everyone. I've been getting creative. Mostly overheads, but the close mics with no overheads (except for a distant room mic) have also been useful for a section where the drummer is playing with mallets. Speaking of which -- mallets on toms are really hard to get clear, punchy and authoritati...

Yeah, I didn't mean it for the polotics of the thing - even Ted Nugent needs to make music. I'm a flaming liberal, and my best bud is a right-wing Libertarian. But the 'tude of this dude ... I mean, imagine that first phone call: "Dude, you really lay it out there." "Yeah, well, all the cocksuckers...

The guy was a jerk in how he wrote the ad but values can matter creatively as well as interpersonally. When I was looking for a band, I did list "no sexist lyrics" in my CL ad because I'm not the lyricist but I am done with that shit for this lifetime. Got tons of replies, too.

Panning: Glyn Johns + 2 close miced toms

Greetings. I've got some tracks recorded with the "Glyn Johns" setup for overheads but also close mics on the toms (yes, I know, the technique was developed to conserve tracks/mics but that's just how the guy recorded it). I'm doing 10:00 and 4:00 on the overheads and I've been panning the close mic...

Thanks for the replies. I think we'll maybe talk with the owner once we have what we need. I've done sessions as an engineer in someone else's studio where I've hit technical glitches, software or hardware related and it can be tough. This is one reason why I asked. Back in the late 80s/early 90s I ...

Thanks. My concern with the engineer is that he's been at it a long time and seems quite set in his ways and satisfied with his own limits--somehow his inability to deal with MIDI was our problem, despite the blazingly simple request. My sense is he mostly does live sound and band management, and fo...

Crap Session Experience -- what would you do?

I'm writing as an amateur audio engineer but also a musician with decades of experience going into studios with independent bands. I have also recorded records on my own, taken recording classes, and even written for this august magazine back in the day. But I've had a shit session as a musician, th...

Thanks. It's hard to tell. We're pretty good at turn-taking in arrangement. If there's a "Shimmer" reverb on my bass part, there's a clean, verbless guitar and a dry sax. Sometimes the guitar and keyboard ambiance can get a little crowded but that's it. Stereo amps is a great idea but not sure we ca...

Reanimating this thread as I came to the TOMB to think this question through. I'm in a band where the guitarist uses a lot of rhythmic delays and really massive reverbs on his Strymon pedals, but they are all in front of his amp input, not part of an effects loop. As the bassist, I occasionally also...

thanks everyone for the replies. I think we will make the switch later this summer and then I will see how it sounds and what's possible. It's an imperfect situation, though since I do serious mix downs only a few times a year, I think I'll just borrow back my wife's desk on those days and move the ...

Thanks for the replies. I can't be on the short end because there's only half a wall there.

The question is whether 11/12 feet is "too close" or not for near fields.

Best,

Doing it wrong--monitoring along the long wall

Hi Everyone, Short question: I want to know if anyone has practical tips of setting up and monitoring along the long wall. I've got an 18x12 room, and am considering setting up my monitors along the middle of the long wall. One other irregularity -- on my left there would be a normal wall, on my rig...
