Re: What mics for female rock vocalist (alto)? Plus a couple vocal recording questions
Thanks folks. She sounds good on the SM7, and through the 58. I did a sound art piece with her reading a user agreement on the SM7 and it's quite solid. The 4050 is clear and good but not "flattering" -- but then maybe I don't want that? IDK. In practice she uses a small head-worn DPA (very handy if...

Re: DIY DI full range guitar questions
Just to wrap up the thread: I went with 3 DIs: pre everything, pre time-based effects through the VTDI, with amp sim on, and post-time-based effects. For almost everything, I will be using a combination of the first two, and adding time-based effect ITB, or by going back through my H9 so I can get t...

Re: Planning for December DIY drum recording
Big thanks to everyone. We spent 3 whole days just moving mics around and plugging them into preamps to see what's what. We then a little over 4 days tracking drums. Total luxury, and unlike a professional studio, we could feel good knocking off when we were tired (rather than being worried about "n...

What mics for female rock vocalist (alto)? Plus a couple vocal recording questions
Greetings. Here's my next question for our project. I need some guidance on mics for alto female rock vocals. My wife (and drummer, and singer in this project) is a most laid-back singer, has a range of about 12-15 semitones, and the vocals are for music that is somewhere between indy-rock, post-met...

Re: Planning for December DIY drum recording
Hi All, I'm writing in two and a half days into recording. We are taking a long slow pregame, as we have everything until July 5th. this thread was very helpful. The one bit of help I could use at this point is front-of-kit / room mic and where to put it. . The room is 323 square feet, with about 9'...

Re: DIY DI full range guitar questions
Thanks everybody. I think if I can spare the channels, I'll go with three DIs then: 1) straight from instrument 2) after dirt, before time-based effects and 3) after time based effects, with VTDI sim on and set to taste. That gives me one "finished" track and two other options if the "finished" vers...

DIY DI full range guitar questions
Greetings. This is a companion thread to "DIY December Drum recording." To recap, my wife and I formed a 2-piece during the pandemic and wrote 8 songs. We are going to record ourselves. (Now in July, not December) In our duo, I play a touch guitar, which is tuned Bb0-D6. So I am covering both bass a...

Re: Planning for December DIY drum recording
Hi Everyone, Thanks for all the great suggestions on the thread. We turned out to be simply too tired to do this in December. But now that the school year is done, we are planning to do the drum recording this summer. The pandemic is still going, we won't be fully vaccinated until August, and we're ...

Re: wringing extra sends out of a Mackie 1402, or a patching problem
Thanks. This is so obvious and yet, I needed you both to point it out to me. Problem solved. And yes it has the alt3/4.
For line level signals and modular level, is there any reason why I should be concerned about sound quality? “Transparent” is fine.

wringing extra sends out of a Mackie 1402, or a patching problem
Greetings. I have space in my setup for a 1402VLZ4, which I'm considering. Thing is, in my ideal world, I'd like 6 sends, just for running stuff through different effects. One option would be a patch bay, but I'm wondering if the more experienced mixers here have any good ideas for patching that wou...

Re: I need help High Passing
I like to high pass guitars pretty high. They sound thin on their own but in a mix things sound bigger. Though there is a steep cliff of diminishing returns if you go too far.

Re: Planning for December DIY drum recording
Thanks for all the replies. @Tony - that was a great post on drum phase. Easy to understand and I will follow your directions. @losthighway, yes, my wife is totally into it and will happily work with me to get stuff set up and render opinions. I like the idea of starting simple and adding. So it sou...

Re: Planning for December DIY drum recording
Thanks for the replies. We will try from the corner then. The drums actually sound decent in our shitty iPhone practice recordings so I am optimistic I can get her a good sound. She like a beefy floor tom, so I could go with KSM32 on that, or invest in something big sounding and hypercardioid? Thoug...

Planning for December DIY drum recording
Greetings. My wife and I have formed a 2-piece band (because Covid). We have written some material and want to record ourselves over Christmas. Our practice space is pretty quiet and dead sounding. 326 square feet so not huge but not tiny. Looking for suggestions for a good sound and easy mix, assum...
