In search of acoustically transparent foam for DIY ear pad

I've got a ~12 year old pair of Sennheiser HD 495 headphones that are my go to headphones for listening to music at my desk job. They are "on-ear" headphones, with a flat pad of foam that pushes against the ear. Unfortunately the foam has degraded and Sennheiser no longer stocks replacements as this...

I find it makes a big difference to listen to the locations in mono, by sticking a finger in your other ear.

When soldering them, have it plugged into a female XLR. This serves three purposes: 1 - keeps the pins straight in case you melt the plastic a bit 2 - Acts as a heat sink by providing some additional metal. 3 - gives you something bigger to hold onto/put in your vise/lay on the table while soldering...

This was also my first thought. In generally I don't think this is a desired attribute.

Expression College for Digital Arts in Emeryville, CA supposedly has nice gear. I have no idea how useful their program is.

I hadn't thought of that. Can the preamps be expected to undesirably "color" the tape transfer, when it comes to preserving old tapes? Given that these are marketed as "tube" preamps, I'd guess they do have some color. They might be more neutral at the low gain levels you would be using to do a tra...

I think Kayagum and a few others here are moving this towards a more useful question: what are different ways of changing the the sound of the guitars you have to be more useful? Lots of factors can play into the tone: strings, picks, microphone, microphone placement, the room, the floor covering. H...

Re: Buying Computer Interface to Use w/ Analog Gear

I?m also wondering if the preamps of a computer interface would be at all useful in the signal chain before recording to tape. Would this offer any potential improvement over using my very low end Behringer mixer (my current "preamp")? You will very likely see improvement. Also, if I am just using ...

Twice I've had similar problems with my Delta 1010. Both times it was a cap in the power supply that had died. If you are willing to open your Delta 1010 up you can often tell if you have a bad cap by literally sniffing around. Smell all the black barrel shaped components (a little over 1cm tall and...

I'm not sure. I got them new around spring 2002. The name plate on them doesn't say anything about "SE". So I was going to guess v1. However, then I read this version comparison, and mine seem to have the SE (v2) build characteristics.

#2. Get a used NAD receiver and a pair of Axiom m3Ti's, Paradigm Minis, or (hmm...) Infinity 162s. My setup has Axiom m3Tis along with a very beefy integrated Kenwood amp from the late 70s. I need to spend a lot more money treating my room before my speakers will become the weakest link in my mixing.

Verizon? I haven't heard any problems with Verizon's phones - I thought they were CDMA, no?
Yes, but according to wikipedia, they are starting to roll out the G4 standard LTE, which is a GSM variant. There are probably very few, if any, people using GSM phones with Verizon -- yet.

On the new computer, have you individually used each DVD drive to write a disk? And they each took significantly less than 15 minutes?

What type of drive and interface is the source data being read from?
