Re: firepod system requirments
I'm a PC guy, so I can't speak towards the Mac, but I run it pretty well on a 700 mHz laptop. There are even settings in the presonus 'control panel' to specify a slower CPU.
This is a dang nice interface. I recommend trying it out. Mebbe from somewhere with a good return policy?

Carvin pb100-15/8 ohm (Nashville)
Great bass amp for sale, excellent condition, bought new last year. I'd like to get $200 but am also interested in trades.

Re: advice on interfaces (longwinded)
Dude...the new interfaces from Presonus are awesome. I have the firepod and I am very happy with it. The sound is fantastic. I think you'd be very happy with the firebox.

Re: Fruity vs. Reason?
I ended up buying Fruity Producer Edition. It is wonderful, and I don't think I would have been as happy with Reason, for the simple matter that I can record audio in FL and mangle it with my favorite Buzz Effects.

Re: Audio Interface
It's not the transfer speed that is compromised, it's the power to the pres available on the USB bus.

Re: Is reason worth the money?
Can't recall if anyone mentioned FruityLoops. I just got 5, producer edition. It is smokin'. For $150 you get a kick butt program that also supports buzz machines, which for me, takes care of some really cool sounds that I was leaning towards Reason for. Highly recommended.

Re: Audio Interface
I promise I don't have any connection to Presonus further than being a happy user:
The firepod or firebox - the firepod little brother are awesome. Why bother with a USB pre? The way I understand it is that there's much less juice on the USB bus, resulting in compromised pres.

Re: Presonus Firepod - is it hot?
I have one, it's fantastic. No problems, super low latency. There's also the firebox, a firepod little brother.
