I also must say I dont think any amount of intention "trying to be helpful" makes up for that help being in the form of incorrect information and spreading of rumours and unsubstantiated myths. Is ony expected to base all decisions on the intentions rather than the fruit of the works?

Set the gain really low and stick a limiter before the preamp.
