Re: Vinyl surface noise

Lots of new records can still have junk/particles on them straight from the plant. Have manufacturing/materials gotten more half-assed in recent years? Probably...Anyway check out the Spin Clean, it's like a brush/bath for discs. Does a great job at a tiny fraction of the price of a VPI etc.

Upon seeing this thread pop up again I have to chime in and say that ~3 years after buying this record it still gets regular play and is a valued part of my collection. A number of guests have been impressed by it, too. The songs and spirit really hold up well past the novelty of the recording media...

I bought what appears to be the same mic (except blue body, Ampex branded, and a slightly different case) around '06 for something like $135. Used it a couple times but never got into it. Pretty much hate it, actually. It always seemed like it was picking up everything EXCEPT the source I was trying...

+1!! I've stacked a 12" tom (2-headed) on top of a snare and gotten a super deep/weird Al Green kinda sound. But the extra ~9 inches of height means you'll either need a super duper low snare stand or to just do the take with the top head at chest level :P

Ah, gotcha. At first I was like "wait, Bill Pullman's been making records all this time...?" Checking it out now, beautiful stuff.

Can't wait to hear the disc, thanks for sharing!

Really, really great. Yet another TOMB discovery whose vinyl I need to plunk down for. SHUCKS. I'm sure this will translate beautifully on vinyl, too. It's quite reminiscent of Jim O'Rourke's "The Visitor," which I absolutely love. BTW, I'm not familiar with this Pullman you speak of, but if it's in...

Packy, you'll have your vinyl soon, thanks so much! Gotta Groove is a breeze to work with and I recommend them. Glad to hear it - I've been in touch with GGR over the last couple days and they've already been super responsive and cool. Plus, having their own crowdfunding platform and syncing it up ...

Mike, I've never heard of you before but it took all of 20 seconds for me to decide to buy the vinyl. Really great work here. Sound, writing, performances, all fantastic and it hangs together so beautifully. I rarely, RARELY buy records with so little knowledge or reference, but I could instantly fe...

Also of note: sometimes even the edits/lengths of the songs are different between stereo/mono.

This is especially (or only?) true on the White Album. Mono Helter Skelter has a wildly different ending that knocked me on my ass.

Yamaha REV7 Error Code "E2"

Hi, y'all, I've recently acquired a REV-7 that appears to be in fine shape. It was rarely used and serviced about 5 years ago, but pretty much hasn't been touched since. Upon firing it up the screen is stuck on the opening page (YAMAHA REV7 V 1.0 8505), and it never displays the effect name/paramete...

hmm, good point. I guess in a single day there are far, far less people downloading from myspace music pages than there are streaming the tracks, hence the compression. Still, what a pain in the ass and ears!

yeah man, that sounds great! Big fan of the crunchy drums. You've also got an excellent group dynamic happening for a one-man recording. You got any tricks/advice on that aspect of things, like overdub order, etc? Haha, and I just saw Sleepytown Sound's motto: "offering ponytail-free recording in To...

Question about Myspace Music

What kind of compression does the myspace audio player use, and why does it sound so crappy? I've never heard this kind of poor quality come from any other stream besides maybe really compressed video. I believe if you download a track from someone's page it's still the same mp3 that they originally...

Does Technics make a 1200 with some kind of semi-auto design, even just something to lift the tone arm up at the very end of the record? The one thing stopping me from going for one of those (besides being dead broke right now of course) is that I wouldn't be able to put on a record and walk away/cl...

Thanks Joel, actually the only thing I changed about "Same Train" was ducking the bottom snare mic under the kick to eliminate some rattle-but in retrospect I might not have even kept that change. I would have liked to experiment some more with the drum delay panning in 'High Tonight' per Will Morga...
