Just had an interesting experience with the band I'm currently recording. We are cutting the tracks with drums, two guitars and bass. On one particular song the beginning just didn't sound right. One of the guitarists thought the bass was out of tune but the bass player figured it out after a couple...

I'll chime in here and give you a few very low cost suggestions if you want to go with a minimum investment. You're right, there's about a hundred different ways to do this and you can spend a modest amount of money or you can drop a large wad. I'm going to assume that sharing files with other studi...

Ok, so, we're talking a hi-fi power amp (integrated amp) instead of a "pro audio" amp. Why won't my 1976 Pioneer SX-650 receiver work for NS-10 duty? It sounds great and has two sets of speaker connects. I have a pair of Yamaha NS-6490s hooked up to it already, and it is hooked up to analog out 7-8...

Another option is to go with an integrated amp. One of the advantages to using an integrated is that it has a volume control that you can set so that you will never exceed a preset maximum loudness. Compared to a receiver an integrated will be built to a higher standard, will be able to better handl...

That was a great post from Brad347. The toms are hard because the relative tension of the two heads can make a dramatic difference in the sound. I just started a project last weekend and fortunately the band brought the drums in on Friday night so we could get them set up and tuned so we could get a...

$200 is a little slim but I would suggest that you try to get a used integrated amp. An integrated is going to have a better build and more headroom than a typical receiver. An integrated amp from Onkyo, Denon, NAD, Hafler, or Marantz will sound just fine. I wouldn't worry too much about the wattage...

you need to really offer something to these people that they can't do themselves This gets to the heart of Tide's problem. He has a portable setup and he is recording in his client's space. As long as he keeps doing that he is setting himself up for exactly the situation he is getting. When you're ...

I know exactly how you feel because I've had the same thing happen. In fact, my last client bought a 002 and a 57 after I did 5 songs for them that they were very happy with (silly me, I thought it was some of my best work). They're putting their own stuff up on Myspace now and to my ears it sounds ...

I have a Mackie 1642 VLZ but I mix in the box with a program called n-Track Studio. I do have a theory and it has to do with the sound of the Mackie. I think you hit it on the head - the Mackie softens the sound. In this particular instance the effect was judged as positive by 5 of 7 listeners. For ...

We regularly host touring bands at our house and while I can't add anything particularly new to the discussion, I'd like to reinforce a few points. THEFT : A van with a trailer may as well have a bright flashing neon sign that says, "Free Instruments, Laptops, Cash - Come And Get It!". It's so bad n...

Customer Service at the AT&T Wireless store: $36/hr. This represents a base rate plus sales commission. If you're a good salesman you can routinely earn $36/hour. Look in your local paper at the help wanted ads for salesmen. People with good sales skills are in extremely high demand. For every cell...

"Take out some mids, it sounds too muddy" vs. "The guitar is not really cutting through, can you add some mids". I think you pretty much answered your own question. When a musician starts talking about 'mids" you have to ask them to be more specific. It's like someone saying they want something to ...

I think there's a few reasons to track each song separately to a different song file. I don't use Cubase but I'm assuming that it works mostly like my DAW. You may not agree with all of this but here's why I do it that way: 1) I don't like to have everything sound the same on each song. I intentiona...

The Delta 1010 is an absolute classic why haven?t they capitalized on there 10 year success? I'm a very happy 1010 owner and I wonder about the same thing. It looks to me like the industry is moving toward firewire and the new sexy products seem to be of that format. Not only hasn't M-Audio release...

How Accurate Are Your Converters?
For the most part, digital gives back what you give it. I've been seeing this line for years and years. I'm calling bullshit on probably 98% of converters. Have you A/B the source to the digital? Listen to the mic pre/mixer out and then listen to the out of the digital source. Unless you have that ...
