BEAUTIFUL. BEAUTIFUL.
I wish you whatever it takes to keep making music like this.
Great songwriting, excellent selection of instruments and sounds, excellent mixing.
You're making me love tape hiss again, Austin!

geek-tech question: What kind of mics didja use?

+1 on joninc's comments. Sounds like the bass is doing some interesting stuff, but it barely comes through on my computer speakers (most bass parts will at least make themselves known on my 'puter system, nomsane?) Like joninc sez, carve alittle bottom from the kick, and add a little to the bass in ...

It was good for you to record, but not really fun for me to listen to. * Guitars too busy in intro. One guitar, or a doubled part making a strong melodic statement, would have been better * Drums sound like they're in another room, very loud. * Vocal has an attitude I just don't relate to. KInd of l...

Two really excellent songs that dovetail beautifully. Excellent singing and musicianship. I really like the 3-over-4 and 2-over-3 rhythms that occur in each song. If I walked into a bar and the band was playing the first song, I'd stay. Really petty tech stuff: * Some of the cymbal crashes in the fi...

Microphone cable suggestions

I'm surprised I couldn't find this in the search engine, but I couldn't. And I tried the Gearslutz site too. So it's time to buy some good mic cables. I want a couple of 50-foot lengths and five to ten 20-foot lengths. I will certainly consider making my own if I can save a bundle. Let me know what ...

A five-page-and-still-growing thread developed off of the MXL R144 (formerly R44) ribbon mic. It's right here in the Tape Op gear forum. Here's the link:

Someone please correct me of the pedal brand/name if you know it. But it was a Dimarzrio black coffee or something like that, really fuzzy, crackly distortion, totally horrible for guitar. That would be the Danelectro Black Coffee. Everybody should have a drawer full of these Danelectro Mini pedals...

Howdy chovie d - Re. the 990 and R44 in the Toneport: I'm assuming that the phantom power is either ON for all mic inputs, or OFF, correct? Otherwise you'd just turn it on for the 990 and not for the R22. The essence of the sticky post is that the phantom power will screw up your ribbon mic ONLY if ...

Last night I spent some time listening to my test recordings of the R44. There were no revelations, and I don't think the audio is exciting enough to post, but here is a summary of what I heard: Earlier, I wrote After setting the mics up, I began by getting some levels while music played back on my ...

All you really need to do is go to your local Guitar Center/Sam Ash/whatever and try some amps. Call them up in advance and schedule some time on a Monday or Tuesday morning. Tell 'em you're in the market for an amp and want to try a few out, and you're coming in at XX:00 with your own guitar . The ...

I had a bit of time to test the MXL R44 ribbon mic last night. There?s more listening to do, and much more information to be gathered, but these preliminary observations may help others and further the discussion on this exciting world of inexpensive ribbon mics. The quick review: I like this mic a ...
