Re: bad habits in R&B/Hip Hop
pet peev's: compression happy engineers, HARSH highs, overdubs not matching, hearing mic proximity, hearing digital distortion, reverb happy eng., A DON'T CARE ATTITUDE, etc. Why is it that we live in an age where most people have extreme attention deficit disorder and yet 99.9% of modern hiphop/R&B...

Re: Good mic or good compression?
forget the compressors. if you don't have a solid signal to work with, a compressor won't make it any better. It is wiser to focus you funds on great preamps and decent mics. Preamps are the backbone to your recording signal, and will increase the quality of you signal chain. I'm sure most would agr...

Re: Smooth highs......how do they do it?
don't master it yourself if your client will listen. good mastering houses have access to high end eq's that you don't.
just take your time. make good mic judgement and placement. use only what you need to advance a mix. overprocessing a mix can ruin things. and find a good mastering house.

Re: How do I get a more fuller/punchy sound when tracking dr
Sometimes it starts with the basics. Tuning is key. If its a good drummer, on a good (tuned) set, in a good room, its usually a good recording. I always give my mics a bit of space for air. This tends to help during mix downs. By doing this your drums have a sence of depth. Roll off any drum peice t...

Re: Avalon Vt 737
I disagree. The compressor is keeper and the pre should go in the trash. Comp is just the way i like it. Transparent. You don't hear it working (if you know what your doing). "Squishy???" Must be hitting it too hard. Back of gain or put a pad in. Clean. low noise floor. Great going direct. EQ's not ...
