Re: Cheap Spring Reverb Solution Volume IV - Budget Consumer Equipment (FOSTEX 3180)

Surfybear makes spring reverbs that are pretty great. They just put out a “studio” spring, but looks like it’s not cheap. $650. I was in the right place at the right time and got an Orban spring really cheap from a studio that was closing down. And this looks ridiculously cool, all labeling is in Ru...

Re: $999 pop filter

For that price I’d want the outer ring cast in solid gold, not a 1 micron gold plate on aluminum. I’m sure solid gold would absorb more resonances or something.

Re: Deluxe Yankee Hotel- a production master class

Yesterday I got the YHF double album in the mail. I’ll enjoy listening to it on vinyl while studying the gatefold LP jacket, it’ll be like I’m 20 again. Well, not really. But it should be fun.

The 7-LP deluxe set just sounds like work. Too much work.

Re: My two-tone m160

On the Beyer site I was referred to:

Consolidated Sound Services LLC
341 Schoolhouse Road, MA, United States, 01026
service@consolidatedsoundservices.com

They are indeed servicing m160's.

Re: My two-tone m160

It was about a 3-week round trip, not bad. And my job, including replacing the xlr input, was about $350. If you just need the ribbon motor done I’m sure it would be less.

My two-tone m160

I’ve had this mic for decades. It’s etched “ORTF”, as it apparently once belonged to the Office de Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française. I only have one, so can’t use it in ORTF pattern. Matte silver. “Made in W. Germany”. When I got it it had ORTF’s proprietary Sogie connector on it. So I screwed th...

Re: I don't need another ribbon...or do I?

I like ribbons. AEA R92 lives on a Swart guitar amp. Beyerdynamic m160 is with Beyerdynamic for repair (it was sounding tinny, not much response below 150 hz). I’ve had one Stager SR-2N for a couple of years, and have been liking it on drums more and more — using it fok (not close) or aimed at the s...

Re: DI bass and guita

I often run a DI track and a miked amp when isolation is not an issue.

Lately I’ve been using the mic’ed amp more, a Phil Jones Super Flightcase with an RE20, into RND 511/Daking Comp 500/Iron Age LH95.

The mic track sounds great, usually.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Today I got a stereo stager SE-2N. Long story, but something I’ve had for months sold, and the money was there. I have the original SR-2N, and I like it on drums. I could have bought another and rigged up a Blumlein mount over the kit, but the stager is so useful on many things… So now the stereo ve...

Re: Name 3 core mics

I remember thinking about this years ago. I figured I could record anything with: EV PL20, Oktava 012 (pair, so cheating) and what was my best LDC at the time, a Soundelux u195.

I still have everything but the soundelux, so this year my “do anything” LDC would be Gefell UM70.

Re: DIY microphones as of 2022

I picked up a 3U Audio GZ251, it’s a good mic. Lots of heft, lots of low end, and a sparkly high end.

Re: My Massive Preamp Comparison

Interesting. You’re right, the differences are subtle, but I can hear a bit. Chandler was “more different” than the others. Allen & Heath held up well. I’m disappointed API wasn’t more of a standout. First external mic pres I ever bought were APIs, on the reco of an engineer I had worked with. I als...

Re: AIAB pedals

The only time I’ve used those pedals is when I wanted to play a Gretsch hollow body at an open mic. Tech 21 Liverpool. If it’s late at night I might use the Amp Designer plugin in Logic, it seems reasonably decent. Last night I was working on something, and my recorded tone from a tweed Princeton tu...

Re: Omnis on toms

I’ll have to try both heads. Yeah, hoping to get the full cymbal sound with an Omni underneath.

But good points too, proximity effect and I’m going to get the cymbals in cardioid anyway.
