does anyone know why laptops seem to universally pack 4-pin firewire connectors versus the 6-pin? I always figured it was a 'power-saving' thing, but I figure most people operate with their laptops plugged in, anyway. that is really interesting to read about the format/connector wars. I do, however,...

thanks for the feedback and for folks sounding in with their experiences. I am hot on track here chasing leads on medium-sized, secluded cabins, chalets (what the heck is a chalet anyway?) and vacation rentals in central PA. I'm still a bit unsettled about the possibility of things not going well re...

this is all very cool. we want to do this in mid-May. This is the off season in PA (for skiiing), so we are hoping this might be a good time. I am stuck with logistical issues. 1. How to find a good spot outside of Philadelphia ? 2. How to manage expectations with the owners so they don't think deat...

Recording in a Cabin!!
I want to bring this up again. Has anyone pulled off booking a cabin (for those of us who have no buds with cabins) and recorded in it? Is this something to disclose with a landlord or is it best to lay low about it? I'd imagine if it's secluded enough, it wouldn't be a problem. Curious to hear of f...

thanks for the input.. I think that's all I needed to hear. I guess in the back of my head I'm expecting to put out a really strong beautiful mix.. the loud part makes me cringe, but you're right, it was part of the vibe and hell it's unique and gets your attention. I'm putting the compressors away!...

taming a loud section
I realize some of this might be recording 101,use compression and limiting, etc. etc. but curious what folks do when they have a very loud part of a mix that is overwhelmingly loud. in my latest battle, we recorded a woman playing yuke and singing with 2 room mics, and two mics about 1-3 ft away fro...

Need UPC code
Looks like you can either have your own GS1 membership (which costs $$, right?) or you get one from a company already with a GS1. Does it make sense to get a GS1? I don't intend on putting out more than a handful of CD's in the next few years myself. anyone hooking up UPC codes on the cheap who have...

I haven't had much luck getting a good guitar sound, especially distorted guitar, by placing a mic as close as possible to the speaker. If I have anything close to a 'it tends to work here' spot, it's about 1 - 3 feet away from the amp. Sometimes folks look at me strangely when I do this, but tend t...

Room mics can be cool, if you have the space for them. If you're going 2-track and can mix live, then throw up a stereo pair, along with whatever you can pull from the board. do you mic the amps and drums into the live mix regularly? get some good isolation headphones to get a good idea of what's go...
