My technique is to put a cut a 1/4" hole in center 4"X4" square of light cardboard (like a REMO drumhead box) and slip that under the cymbal between the brass and the fuzzy washer thing. It will deaden the sound but if you've got a nice bright overhead mic, it all seems to balance out. If that's not...

Great suggestions. Thanks everyone!
In the end, I abandoned the idea of going after my typical sound and let the computer be the computer, not my Tascam 688 (which I love - and which can be heard at www.myspace.com/thelevitations).

Recreating the "dbx trick" sound in PT
Having done all my recording on cassette multitracks, I'm using a computer for the first time this weekend. I've had very good results with the "dbx trick," recording with dbx engaged and playing back with it disengaged to compress the track. It's a sound I love and that people recording with me ten...

I am a huge fan of the "DBX Trick" with my 424 (record with DBX on, playback with it off). For someone without outboard gear, it's a great way to impart a compressed 60s-ish (to my ears) sound to home recordings. My recording partner describes the treble as "God-like." I call it the noise enhancer. ...

We put a LOT of hours on that machine and do a LOT of recording and I'm proud of the sound we get out of it. Two of the most recent songs are actually re-recordings we went back and did because we were unhappy with the original versions. We get pretty uptight about doing things right. The only outbo...

Saying goodbye to my old 4 track...
...in pretty fine style, if I may say. The three new songs at www.myspace.com/thelevitations are the last ones that will be made on my 424mkIII. It's sad, but Old Blue is dying after a couple years of very heavy use. Good machine. It is being replaced through the magic of the Tape Op message board, ...

Latest Levs- psych/folk rock
A couple new ones at www.myspace.com/thelevitations The new ones are: "Get Your Feet Off the Ground" and "Lots of Luck." The latter is just me, without my ace songwriting/recording/guitar wiz partner and features a more scaled back sound. "Get Your Feet Off the Ground" is another attempt at big prod...

Thanks for the kind words. You can find a couple of recent recordings done for another band at: http://www.myspace.com/hartandthehurricane Peep songs "Line Dancing..." and "Wrote Her Name..." These were done with the same gear as the Levitations recordings. I think these songs sound a little better,...

New song, Psych/Folk Rock
I put up a new song, "She Scatters the Seeds," on my band's myspace site: www.myspace.com/thelevitations We use a 424mkIII with a couple decent condenser mics and I'm really pleased with the results. Not perfect, but a good representantion of the songs and enough fidelity to allow for some groovy mo...

This is my first opportunity to actually post something that I've recorded. Shit, these computers are OK!
This was done on a 424mkIII.
I'm very proud of the song, "South Sound." Best thing we've done. More like this one on the way.
