Re: Least favorite connectors

Mini phone jack. Seems like more and more things have these unreliable jacks on them these days.

A headphone coming unplugged is usually not a calamity, but when it's the mic or line input of a portable recorder (which might be your phone), I want something more robust.

Re: Question for wiring up microphone to stereo system

I work at a pizzeria in Lawrence, KS, and I am trying to figure out the best way to wire up a microphone to call out orders when they are ready into our stereo system. The amp we are using is your typical amp with multiple RCA inputs and channels....I understand I need a pre amp for the mic and suc...

Re: need a banjo recommendation

What are some good makes and models of banjos to look for? $200- $300 There are some entry level banjos in that price range. I assume you're looking for a 5-string banjo (oh, yeah, you know nothing about banjos - better at least find that out). Take a look at the Recording King RKOH-05. Amazon's cu...

Focusrite 18i8 USB Audio Interface Review Posted

4 mic inputs, up to 8 line inputs, 2 instrument DIs, two headphone jacks on the front panel with independent volume controls and mixes, practically zero latency (really!) input monitor mixing with hardware DSP and a nice software application to control up to 5 stereo or 10 mono mixes. 24-bit 96 kHz,...

Re: Anyone mixing OTB to a solid state recorder?

For quick, rough mixes, I'll use my handheld Tascam DR-07 via the analog line-in, which allows me to distribute rough mp3 mixes quickly and easily. But (obviously) for hi-res mixdown, I'd love to find a solid state recorder that has digital I/O and that supports 24/96 The TASCAM DR-100 MkII support...

Review of the ALVA Nanoface Posted

I've just posted a review of the new ALVA Nanaoface. This is the one that looks like a baby RME Babyface, but it isn't. Still pretty good, though. Here's a direct link to the Nanoface Review PDF since I know you're in a hurry. But poke around the web page if you have time and you might find somethin...

Matt is almost correct Those numbers are correctly called reference fluxivity, but operating level is the common term. As far as the + goes, that's calculated in dB referenced to 185 nanowebers/meter, the Ampex standard level. So +6 is 6 dB above 185, or 370 nW/m. (6 dB is a ratio of 2:1). Since 3 d...

Don't most of these recorders have an 1/8" external mic input jack? Plug the Dry Case's headphone jack extension into the Zoom's external mic input and use a waterproof lavaliere mic, something like the Countryman B6. Yes, the Zoom does indeed have a jack for an external mic, and it indeed works wi...

Dry Case Review Posted

The Dry Case is a watertight vinyl pouch designed to protect a phone or other similarly sized portable device from the elements. When I saw it at CES, I thought it might also work for a handheld recorder. It's about the right size, and it has a cable and sealed jack for connecting headphones or a TR...

Hi Mike, I'm very impressed by your review. It's exactly the level of tech detail I'm curious about on gear, especially these dime-a-dozen interfaces. I think it's a new benchmark for what a gear review covers--it's no longer acceptable to just say "sounds great!" Thanks for the kind words. I wish ...
