Re: 421 bass rolloff switch
Hmmm... not alot of 421 lovers here. Maybe admirers, but not lovers. Well, I bought it already and look forward to playing with it. I just need to figure out what the next mic purchase will be... still gotta get me one of those SM7's. I've been singing into my 414 for almost a decade and need a cha...

Re: Recording to DAT-- your experience?
One thing about DATS. I had read on some forum that they can start to degrade in as little as 7 seven years. I never believed it, but now some of my DATs that are newer than that are starting to show signs: little brief "drop outs" and occasionally little digital noises appear when I play some of my...

Re: Recording to DAT-- your experience?
I also thought the reason for the space at the beginning (I usually use a full 60 seconds) was in case the tape broke at the spool, it could be repaired.

Re: UFO Music (United For Opportunity)
Is anyone here familiar with these guys? It seems interesting, but I'm wondering if it's akin to TAXI, only with a snazzier website. UFO Profile I know someone who used to work for some small labels in NYC and he told me these guys are legit. the main thing is, they apparently don't want to come ou...

Re: Tube Mic with Tube Pre-amp??? too much?
I only have two tube mics, an AKG Solidtube and a CAD M9. With those two, I find they do sound better most of the time through a solid state pre, especially my Langevein DVC. Experiments running the above through a Drawmer 1969 haven't been as successful (I realize the 1969 only has a tube output s...

Re: Vocal sounds across a record. . .
People who hire me are on a tight budget. I'll find a good chain and roll with it until I get to a song where it doesn't seem to work anymore, then I'll start experimenting.

Re: Mastering Software - what do you use?
I downloaded the wavelab 5 & Samplitude demos and ran them through the paces. I know many will disagree, but I liked Wavelab a lot better. Wavelab is a lot better than CD Architect. I didn't think much of Samplitude's plugins, although I liked the EQ in the master section a lot. I'd download demos a...

Re: How do you keep your clients from getting frustrated?
It's the oldest trick in the book, but sometimes if you tell them to just "run through it one time" before you record, then hit the record button, you'll capture magic.

I actually think the Steinberg NaturalVerb that comes with Wavelab sounds pretty good. I use it a lot on mixes that sound too dry.

I also love my Avalon U 5. I also think the DI in the Langevein DVC is pretty good for bass & keys, if you also needs pres/limiters.

Re: Kelsey mixing console
We used to use an old 12 x 2 (maybe 8 x 2) for live sound when we were touring the "college radio" circuit. I always liked the sound of that board. It also had a good internal spring reverb. I don't know if it's going to cut the mustard in a studio... But it depends on what you're used to.

Re: Mic Picks for stepping up the quality
I like the CAD M9 a lot for the money for voice, electric guitars & acoustic guitars. For snare I think the much maligned AKG C1000S is pretty sweet (I've had lots of real world success with this outshining a sm 57, and sometimes it'll even do an acoustic guitar justice. I used to use my pair for ov...

Re: tips on getting vocals to sit in the mix
I find the only way to achieve this is compression at mixdown. I prefer to use my Distressor in Opto mode with the attack at about 9 and the release at 0. Reduce the input if it's distorting/compressing too much for your taste. In a pinch I'll use my Joe Meek VC1Q (not the current sense type). I've ...

Re: Recording to DAT-- your experience?
I used to mix everything to DAT or outboard CD-R. Then I got the bright idea that I'd get better results mixing to PC via a PCI sound card @24 bit. Guess what? So far, nothing I've done to PC can stand up to what I mixed previously to DAT or CD-R 16 bit. You'll be fine. My only advice is to leave ma...
