in our small studio, we have the following: fender blues junior - probably my favorite for recording. it's small, easy to position, versatile, sounds great with the blues driver and has the perfect amount of crunch to it. a peavey classic 30 - this little guy surprised us. i occasionally prefer it t...

i've used my 4047 for a lot of different things. as an overhead, as a vocal mic, as a violin and acoustic guitar mic. i, too, have noticed several intstruments and voices that it really doesn't do so well with (anyone who is the least bit nasal and can't really sing their vowels particularly open). ...

use your ears. boom yo. at this point in the thread, it seems to me that people have made their case, and if you disagree with someone or are curious about what someone's said, the best thing any of you can do is to try out whatever people are doing differently than you on your own gear and see wha...

thanks for the input about the case. it does seem that several people had failing power supplies early on. no good. i will look at those other two products. any other feelings on the machine built in general?

the system i'm considering building

would love any feedback on this, perhaps it's useful to anyone else building a 4Q 2006 DAW setup. i'm using a MOTU 896 HD, by the way. Re: Stardumb "Self Help"

the screaming parts are not really sitting in the mix for me. they sound tacked on. maybe you can run them through some heavy compression or saturate them (i prefer screams out of a guitar amp or with a signal split at least, clean in one channel, distorted in another), but they're just feeling like...

Re: Anyone with Universal Audio Gear

i have to agree. i have really enjoyed working with just the brent avirill 1272 i have and i feel like the quality of it alone surpasses anything i've heard out of a multiple use box. conversely, the UA limiters i like.

Re: Help me compare two mixes. mine vs. his

i much prefer his. i feel like the quality of it delievers what you're going for. yours sounds you are fighting the recording medium / equipment, and his is embracing it. never fight your gear, use what it naturally does to get what you want and you'll be overall happier.

Re: Is this a little dry to you?

sounds like you're working heavily with a computer and live stuff, but i feel like the 'live' quality of what you're going for is being lost. is there a way you can play out your programmed stuff through something else to warm it up some before bringing it back. a decent preamp goes a long way on pr...

Re: My first real full band recording... bash it please.

the first guitar that appears in the first track sounds really flimsy. is there a way it could be beefed up some? maybe it's just a mater of bringing it up in the mix. kick could use compression and i agree, all the drums can come up some. the vocals are sitting on top of, not in the mix right now. ...

Re: the physics of meaning

i'm not sure if you're talking about the regular guitar or the 'solo' guitar. the guitar tone is just a regular fender deluxe reverb (volume turned up to 3) and a fender telecaster mic-ed with a good 'ole SM57. the guitar is then copied to a left and right track, one of which is demolished by the PS...

the physics of meaning

three new demos up at http://www.thephysicsofmeaning.com - the album should be fun to record, i'm looking forward to it. we did the demos in a weekend, with the guitar amp in the room with the drums so i got a lot of really funky compression artifacts on the overheads and guitar mic picking up the c...
