I still use a couple RS mics I bought in the 80s. One is a stereo battery-powered condenser that's very useful, the other's a cheap dynamic with a built in cord that ends in a 1/4" jack. Low output but sounds good.

Interesting. Given that EMS synths were responsible for so many cool sounds (Brian Eno, Todd Rundgren, Jean-Michel Jarre, the gated organ on The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again") it's surprising there aren't more emulations around.

I like the idea that there's somewhere that carries a modest assortment of strings/picks/sticks/heads, and is open well into the evening and on Sunday. I was going to say the same thing...Targets around me have strings/picks and some super-cheap electric guitars/basses. I always thought it was cool...

When I worked at a studio, the main engineer had those basic deposit rules. However, interestingly enough, he did not want rappers (not that there are any rappers in Davis, CA javascript:emoticon('')) Just curious, was that ElectroLair? I lived in Davis from '96-'06 and at the time that was ...

I've only heard a bit of their stuff but I was very impressed.

Unlike some "ambient" artists they leave a lot of space in their music and have the patience to let individual sounds breathe & develop.

When I've answered musician ads (either print or online) I've had better luck playing with people I met through the ad's poster than the poster themselves. About 6 years ago I answered an ad for a sax player assembling a jazz combo. Turned out to be a Russian Jesus freak who was a decent player but ...

tried muting physically with foam before, but then it was too dead... perhaps i used too much foam? i really think those "rotosound" strings might be the ticket - my bassist has a set coming in soon and we'll string em up. I'd suggest flatwound bass strings rather than Rotosounds for that classic 6...

Just a tangent, but I once played a vibraphone overdub with somebody manually controlling the speed of the fans to keep them (approximately) in tempo. It didn't really matter all that much in the end, but in the process of experimenting, we made the part more interesting by cranking the speed of th...

Be sure to put the demo thru its paces before buying (you can't resell Sonar). I consider myself pretty DAW savvy. I've quickly learned how to get Tracktion, Garage Band, Reaper, Acid, Live, Samplitude, Fruity Loops, and Orion to do what I want. For some reason, even after R'ing TFM Sonar's always b...

Check out a godan radiator - play great and do not see very many around... they go for under 300 used. I was going to suggest the same thing...nice bright/high output single coils & a semi-acoustic vibe from the route under the huge pickguard. There are many wonderful electrics/acoustics/basses in ...

Well, I went ahead and bought it. ipressrecord's logic of $7 a month insurance put it over the top. And I do feel better, but also duped by Apple in some way as well. Yeah, at least for recent Mac lappys it's not really an "option" if you want a functional machine without shelling out big $$ for re...

I've played gigs as a bassist with a guitarist using a 2-tube/1 speaker Silverface Twin--it's still painfully loud. Even when it breaks up it's more of a forceful grit, with none of the sag of a Champ/Princeton/Deluxe/Bassman. In any case plugging into input 2 on either channel will reduce input gai...

Just got it the other day. Cool swampy vibe and arrangements, nothing extraneous. To my ears it sounds a bit darker on the top end than Modern Times or Love & Theft. Call me a heretic but I prefer Dylan's work in the last 10 years to everything he did before. The man's on a roll--the two Dylan shows...

I have not yet seen a good electronica anything interview in tapeOp. It might of happenened and slid under my radar. BOC would be one, that would be good enough. And yeah they aren't freakin' perfect. But whatever, they don't need to be. They are good enough. I am all about hearing about electronic...
