Josephson Mics

I'm looking for a new pair of mics for general ensemble micing (i.e. choral, orchestral, wind ensembles) In the past I have used Schoeps, B&K, Sennheiser MKH, etc.) I'm looking for a lower cost alternative as I can't get a new pair of any of the afore mentioned mics. I was not happy with the earthwo...

Re: mysterious 60 cycle hum question

You might want to pick up an Ebtech hum eliminator. They come in two "sizes" 2 and 6 i/o. While they don't help trace the problems, they're great for quick fixes. Also check your cables for breaks. Something as simple as a poorly shielded cable could be causing your problems.

Re: Recommend powered stereo mic for use with MP3 recorder?

Try the sennheiser MKE300 (list $249). It's not stereo, but it sounds decent.

Re: DAT / mixdown deck plus the true red vs. organe book

I use DAT, CDR, and Computers for mixdowns and have found that all three work fine. It's just a matter of the paticular situation I am in. For remote gigs, I use DAT a lot more often because I have a portable recorder and the tapes are two hours long. CDR: I use the Yamaha CDR with the Apogee UV22 2...

Re: speaker calibration?

Joel is right. After all the gear we use to set up a room, the final test is always performed with the ears. Use a lot of them. The more you use, the better.

Audio Text Book Contributions

I am in the process of contributing to an audio text book for beginning college and junior college level audio production classes. One of the chapters I have been asked to write deals with the world of the freelance audio engineer. If anyone has anything they feel is worth contributing I would gladl...

Re: 828 problems

My 828 (actually borrowed from my boss) started smoking out the firewire port. I called MOTU and they stood by their 3 month warranty, but offered to fix mine (or replace if necessary) it for $49.99. Apparently this is their flat rate, anything goes repair price. At first I was shocked about a 3 mon...

Re: speaker calibration?

I usually set up my speakers with pink noise and dB meter from Radioshack. Don't use the fancy one with the digital readout. It costs too much and is not as accurate as the plain old analogue version. I set the meter to register in the 80dB-90dB range and then find a spot in the room that I think wi...

Re: cheap phones

BSW (http://www.bswusa.com/) has a 5-pack of Senheisser HD202 phones for $89. They're not the best, but they have a lot of Senheisser sound (if that makes any sense).

BTW I had a powerplay catch on fire. I'm not saying it's a bad headphone amp, just make shure it stays cool.
