I've heard that one of them is on pretty much every studio guitar player's pedalboard these days. Those guys like to be in tune.

Spaced omnis sound great for this type of recording, especially if the room sounds good. However, stereo spaced omnis require that the micrphones at least be the same model, hopefully even a matched pair. The varying frequency response of the two completely different microphones will result in a ske...

In my experience there is really nothing that will work completely. You could try gating the vocal some, but if the cymbals are as loud as you say in it, it would probably be too obvious when there is singing. Drastic eq probably wouldn't work either, as most of the cymbals will live in the same ran...

Re: Recording flute, horn, cello and contrabassoon

I'm wondering if the horn will overpower everything and/or sound horrible with a mic close to it. If the horn player is not really good, it will be difficult for him/her to not overpower everything. Hopefully he/she has experience in this setup. Also, IMO, horn sounds horrible close miced. I think ...

Here's a crazy technique I used recently and it sounds pretty good: I miced the acoustic in ORTF stereo, but with the left mic pointing basically where you would point a mono mic (roughly at the 12th fret) and the right mic pointing at an upright piano. I had something weighing down the sustain peda...

I'm listening to a pop song that has mono drums, and remembered this thread. "Father and Daughter" by Paul Simon has mono drums and it works really well. Father and Daughter The song was in the Wild Thornberrys move and was nominated for an Oscar. It's also on his new album Surprise, on which he tea...

I would also say the Mini-Me could be a good solution, albeit a little above your stated price range. The signal chain could be as follows, and I know this works well because I've used it this way: Mic --> Mini-Me --> Laptop This requires the Mini-Me with the USB option. I think the preamps on the M...

For that sultry Miles ballad harmon mute sound, an SM-58 tends to work quite well. Just put the mute right up against the microphone for lots of proximity effect. And I think it sounds best with one of those cheap harmon mutes, not the expensive bubble ones or other variants.

In John Coltrane's "My Favorite Things", does McCoy Tyner make a boo-boo during his solo, or am I just imagining it? Well, how about Tommy Flanagan's entire solo on "Giant Steps?" The poor guy's been playing that tune on every gig of his life since then to prove to people that he actually w...
