Awesome, thanks! Jordan, the drummer, is a beast behind the kit! The drum sizes of his kit are actually pretty small. He uses an 18" kick! We used kit with bigger drums for the dry stuff. It was a really beat up kit they had at Dreamland. It was funny because the iso booth was literally just big eno...

Yay, comments! Gregg, thanks for the compliments! I love working with this band because I think they are great songwriters and their performances are always electric! Snarl, The main drums were setup in the live room, kinda in the middle. 3 U87's, two down low near the cymbals and toms and one up ki...

Your Sister's Canary

I recently engineered this record, Good and Alone by Your Sister's Canary: http://yoursisterscanary.bandcamp.com/album/good-and-alone They are a 3 piece rock band from Brooklyn. Their live shows are pretty freakin' great! The recordings are basically live full band takes with vocals and some other s...

If you want "amp about to blow" distortion then you've gotta get that sound to come out of the amp. Turn the amp up LOUD. Try boosters and distortion/fuzz pedals, too. Make sure the sound coming out of the amp is INSANE.

Then mic it however you please.

Re: Techniques & ideas for 60s/70s style recordings????

My question is really, what other mics out there that would suit what we're trying to get into, or which were well used in 60's/70's garage, rock & soul music? Also....are there any cool ideas on mic placements (esp for guitars) & signal flow etc? You've already got some nice mics. I am a fool for ...

Work fast. Use good gear. Band plays live in a good room together with minimal overdubs. Work fast. Did I mention work fast? Make decisions quickly and stick to them. Do not save processing for mixdown. Process on the way to tape. Process further in mixing. Whatever, just do it fast! Time is money! ...

If going for mono drums, I like a single ribbon above the kit, just up high enough to pick up an even balance of the whole kit. The front of the mic would be aiming down at the kit. I do not put any part of the kit in the nulls. This technique really benefits from the addition of a close mic on kick...

I like m160 on snare.

I don't use it on drummers who may whack it with a stick!

200 Hz (or around there) is the enemy.

But you don't need to kill him to win the battle.

Just keep him at bay with a little EQ and he may even become your friend.

Beware of hi-pass filters. They are like nuclear weapons; often a more extreme solution that the situation demands.

Pretty much anything mixed by Andy Wallace has drum samples augmenting the real drums.

Also, his mixes generally sound amazing, so he must be doing something right.
