It can be the speed selector switch itself. Turn the machine "off" and then work the switch back and forth a few dozen times.

Since not everyone on tape op is American and this is the WorldWideWeb, a couple of points... 1.) People in China also need jobs. 2.) There are some pretty crap audio products made in USA (rolls anyone?) Let's just say that I've been generally unimpressed with the QC of a LOT of stuff made in China...

Wow...that's a cool find! One thing I noticed is the lack of a power transformer, so be aware that it will have a "hot" chassis.

It sounds as if various tracks are not switched properly between "sync" and "repro" playback modes. I assume that you were using "sync" playback mode on the drum tracks when overdubbing the guitars? If so, then perhaps the switching logic in the machine is not working properly; ie, "stuck" in sync o...

Hmmmm..shooting from the hip here.....

Tascams had a bazillion fuses on clips mounted on a circuit card that was typically visible once you removed the back metal panel(s).

Interestingly enough, Altec was *once* a presence here in Oklahoma City. Back in the 1950's (?...I was still a Baby/Youngster), a company named University Sound ran a rather impressive operation here in OKC, making loudspeakers and mics. When I was in High Skrewl (circa 1970), I had met an Universit...

Awhile back, one of the "AudioPhool" magazines (the ones touting speaker cables that cost $1000000/foot, etc) did a shoot-out. An orange AC extension cord from Home Depot, with the Edison connectors chopped off, held it's own vs. the "oxygen-free cables built by virgins under a full moon", at least...

There is NOTHING wrong with using electrical cable/wire for loudspeaker hookups, as long as you don't also use the same connectors on that speaker cable as found on AC mains cords. Awhile back, one of the "AudioPhool" magazines (the ones touting speaker cables that cost $1000000/foot, etc) did a sho...

Nice work! I guess the close proximity of the power transformer to the circuit card(s) didn't cause any hum problems?

Hickock is one of the best brands to find. Oddly enough, in my local area is this guy (I originally met him back in the 1970's when he was playing bass in a local band): http://www.tubesontheweb.com/ ...who sells computer-controlled Hickock systems. He also has a bazillion "fire bottles" on his shel...

In my youth as a guitar amp tech at a music store (circa 1973), I also ran across the "fuses wrapped with foil of some sort". Foil-coated cigarette or chewing gum package wrappers....

I named THAT kludge as a "Wrigley's 100 Amp No-Blo fuse". <g>
