3 was generally best, I think... 2 was kind of muddy, but interesting. 1 seemed to have very little low end.

Cool, thanks.

My concern about cannibalism was less "I'll have to destroy this piece of gear," what as these Akai pres came from a tape machine to begin with, and more "Will I be able to find such a device to cannibalize? Dunno!"

If I wound up using other transformers (say, other than the Shure type being as they require cannibalism) would I have to change anything, or just grab an appropriate transformer and make sure I had the wires going to the right places?

I just got a pair of these preamps for pretty cheap and I'm going to try my hand at your mods, so I too would totally love to see the schems for these when you get the chance. :D

Seconded. It sounds like a woolly mammoth would sound if you trapped it in your amp.

I wouldn't buy the Gibson, because Gibson is a bunch of bastards. I wouldn't buy the Variax, because every recording I've heard of one sounds like an approximation of a guitar. They can do a lot of sounds, they're just not all that fantastic. I wouldn't even consider one until I already had a few hi...

Those are very cool songs. Don't bother adding drums, I'd say - it wouldn't contribute anything to the sound.

On a technical level, it seems like your wife's vocal on the second song is a little... hazy, might be the right word, when she's singing alone.

Rock on.

Re: Woman rockers.

Neko Case is great. Bjork is a funky sort of goddess. Beth from The Gossip rocks the fuck out. Then there's the girl from Pretty Girls Make Graves, the peppy Japanese lady from Deerhoof, the peppy Japanese lady from Enon, the girl from the Arcade Fire...

Re: What's the difference:"talent" vs. "chari

haha, yeah you beat me there..but im saying..do you really think someone is just able to do something automatically? that seems kindof unnatural. Well, I've never encountered anyone who, say, sat down at a piano the first time he saw one and knocked out something brilliant, but I'd certainly say th...

Re: What's the difference:"talent" vs. "chari

.... The Segovia/Cobain example is a good one. No it's not. You think Cobain wasn't talented?? Don't get me wrong, I love the guy. He was a good songwriter, but he keep his guitar work simple, and his vocals are often mumbled incomprehensibly in a way that would make my choir directors go batshit b...

Re: What's the difference:"talent" vs. "chari

I'd separate "talent" and "skill," in that one is natural and one is learned. Charisma is disconnected for either - it is, rather, force of personality, presence. A performer needs charisma, otherwise people don't give a damn. The Segovia/Cobain example is a good one. I think I'd use the term "chari...

Re: Smells like indie spirit

I'll toast to that. I'd throw in another difference between Now and Then, though: Radio Is Fucking Dead. Back when, something new and awesome could actually get played. In my era nowadays, you can count the number of good new artists on the radio on one hand. Ah well. That's what I have the internet...

Re: G4/G5 noise.

My mom's G5 is silent... of course, she's a pro photographer, so noise isn't her main concern, but it doesn't seem to make any noise.
