Looking for 4-track Headstack for Otari MTR 12

I have an Otari MTR 12 with a 2 channel headstack, and I'm trying to hunt down a 4 channel headstack. If anyone has any access to one, or knows where I might find one, please message me. Thanks!

It's okay, I can understand why it might seem odd. I don't even have Logic anymore and don't really keep up on software/digital recording developments.

Thanks for some direction.

6 years ago I was discouraged enough by posters here, to not try it. But I wondered if now some developments had made it more feasible. Does that bother you?

Hmmm...I don't know what format you are working with, but I'm using 8-track, 1/2" tape. I have an AKG BX10, and an Ensoniq DP4 which aren't too bad. I play around with the board EQ, and some compression, but I have mid-range stuff, not Pultecs and 1176's. The board EQ isn't so great (Ramsa WRS4424),...

I'm back for an answer 6 years later! So is this now feasible? Anybody doing this? Like, maybe using a UAD Apollo?

I just want some high quality plate...

I bought an Otari MTR 12. I'm considering getting an A77 too, and just keeping the one I like best. I already have a couple MX5050's at my disposal, that I use for tape delay.

Thanks for the response. So is it difficult to align, or otherwise maintain? Is an Otari MTR just so much better that it's a silly comparison?

Do you have any (or can you direct me to) examples of the A77 I can hear?

Revox A77 vs. Otari MTR 12

So I'm in the hunt for a mixdown 2-track. I record to an 8-track 1/2" Tascam 48, and I have zeroed in on the Otari MTR's as the best mixdown deck I can afford (Studer. Ampex, etc are out of my range). I have checked out a few Otari's in the LA area, and am close to making a decision, but now I have ...

I'm not too worried about over using it, I have pretty good self control.

So...has anyone here used an Aphex Exciter with a 1/2" tape machine? I'm packin' a Tascam 48, loaded with 456.

I guess it depends on what you perceive it's short comings to be, because IMHO the short comings of the narrow formats are also their strengths...if I wanted something outside of their range I would probably reach for a different format. As one of the big supporters of narrow formats, mind you, not...

I am always looking for ways to improve my recordings, and I have read a bit about what the exciters do. I just wanted to try one out, and posed the question in the context of using it with a 1/2" machine, because I know that they don't have the specs of a wider format. I'm not overly concerned abou...

Haha.

I'm not sure why people get so snobby about things like this. The bottom line is that if something changes a sound, it is a valid tool. If, when, or how someone wants to use it is all that matters.

I think a friend of mine has one he will lend me.

Thanks for the response. I see what you mean about using a distortion box. Used exciters are so cheap though, that they can be had for $30 (and they have more direct control, an internal side-chain, and are stereo)....less than a distortion pedal. I think I will borrow one, and see what happens. I w...

Yes, I have read that people like to use them on things like tom fills to bring them forward in a mix. I'm really interested to hear if anyone has used them to compensate for the limitations of 1/2" tape machines. Some seem to like them for 4-track cassette recording, so I wondered if they might pro...

Aphex Aural Excitation, with Half-Inch 8-Track

I come to you humbly... So I know these exciters are poo-poohed, and tut-tutted by many, but I was wondering if anyone has used them while working with the half-inch 8-track format? I searched a bit, but no one mentioned half-inch tape, most were either digitalists, cassetters, or 2-inchers. I'm won...
