I picked up an Optigan w/ 6 discs and a Wurly 200a for $25 each. I also narrowly missed out on a Bosendorfer grand for $700 !!!!! It sold an hour or so after I called.

In addition to Machine Age you might want to check out Treelady Studios. I'd recommend my own studio but it's still under construction...

good luck,

Yes, I always use a mono overhead on drums. Stereo drums sound unnatural and phony to me. The only instances where I have recorded or really enjoyed listening to stereo drums are when they are a part of a true stereo recording (ie. not a bunch of panned mono or stereo tracks).

I'd also recommend checking out a Studer console. They will definitely hold their value, unlike quite a few other consoles in the same price range.

If you're going to go with Tannoys get the System 15 DMTs they have the paper based driver which is supposed to be superior to the propelyne based driver in the 8s and 12s. I have a pair of the 15s and love them. A pair just went on eBay for only $1500 (I paid around $2300 on eBay for mine). New the...

I purchased a Calrec console from Vintage King and they told me to only use Longframe jacks on its patchbay or else you will damage the bay over time. I think the TRS' jack tip is too large and will damage the contact point after repeated use.

It's uncanny how it does that considering the figure-8 pattern, but it does....
The Coles provides the great rejection because of the Fig. 8 pattern.

Thanks for posting those liner notes! There should be a thread devoted to posting the liner notes of "classic" recordings that give detailed recording data.

I'm another happy Bryston owner. I'm using a new 4B SST to power my Tannoy System 15 DMT IIs. Before I got the Bryston I was using a Parasound amp. The Parasound was fine but had an exaggerated bass response. The Bryston is more balanced, detailed and sweeter sounding. My only complaint is the touch...

The Studio Stories book says that Jazz Samba was recorded with 2 mics on a Sony tape machine at 7 1/2 ips. These details are mentioned in the chapter on A & R Studios. There is much more info on the Getz/Gilberto recording.

All the vocal harmonies were done with a harmonizer? It does a pretty good job, if so. Or did you mean some other kind of standard chorusey effect? Leigh I think it was a Boss Harmonizer. I'm pretty sure it had several different footswitches that could be preset to create different harmonies. I hav...

Here's the most Lennon-esque vocal track I've recorded to date. The song reminds me of something that could have been on the Plastic Ono Band album, but the vocal sound is more from the Revolver era. Recording Notes: The vocal was recorded w/ a Neumann U-48 (VF-14 tube, KK48 capsule) into a Calrec P...

"So far, Sam comes off as an unsympathetic womanizer, more or less coasting along on his God-given talent and looks."

I just re-read my post & thought that that is exactly what happened to Elvis by the mid-60's (even though he always remains somewhat sympathetic in Guralnick's portrayal).
