Re: New Age for Mastering Music

I second Brian... I can't sit and talk about racing volvos at limerock with a PC. But I can with Scott Hull.

More importantly... When making an important decision in life or music, I will choose a human being to consult over a computer 100% of the time. It just seems right... Ya know?

Re: UM70 peeps help? My new mic is humming . . .

Hey Oli here, Sorry this took so long... Yes there is an inherent hum problem in the early UM 70s. I sent mine to Microtech and Geffel in New york and they modded them (probably filter caps). Now they are as quiet as a mouse. You can call G Prime in New York. They are the distributors. They were gre...

Re: Gefell UM70s

Hey

Brian, try movin them out in front of the kit about 2 feet or so and bring em down about 1 foot above the cymbals. Great picture... These were also my first good mics. Pretty much good on anything acoustic.

Re: damn those hard "P"s!

Hey I dont know what the plug-in situation for DP is. I run protools. When confronted with this situation I use filterbank F2 which is a hi pass filter. I just process the offending "Pop" usually rolling off at 12dB per octave from about 300Hz. Just make sure that you process enough to trim back and...

Re: Quiet Air Conditioner for Summer Recording

Short of the real deal there is no ac unit that I have found is quiet enough to use in the same room while recording. But don't despair... It's totally Ok to run ducting from a unit elsewhere: I did it for years. You can get an adapter fabricated at any tin shop. A couple of things to remember: Increa...

Re: which converters do yall prefer

I have to agree with Jeff. Rather than get into converter wars, you should indeed invest in a stable clock source. Jitter and phase incoherance incurred by unstable clocking are responsible for more audible degridation than are slight differances in converters. The ardsync is a good choice. Rosendah...

Re: Damn loud hi-hats, and that washy cymbol effect.

Hey, Recently I've taken to placing the O/Hs to the front of, instead of over the drums - about 3' in front of and 2' higher than the cymbals at about 30 degrees down. It seems to be yielding a much more balanced picture in my room. I'm either using Microtech&Geffel um70s or KM84s. If I want really ...

Re: home studio insurance

Insurance Sucks... But it's a fact o life. Under your home owners policy, you can probably schedual each Item in your studio for some additional premium. It will cost more but that way if something happens there is no question as to the value of the gear. You actually have proof that they know about...

Re: Bass Distortion???

Hey, Depends on the fuzz tone your looking for... I like either the green or silver Big Muff for real fuzz Bass with tons of compression. But I got to put a bid in for the bass Sans Amp... Lots of different tones. Also, I hate to admit it but a guy brought a Bass Pod into the studio and it really di...

Re: How to 'mult' tracks?

Actually "multing" tracks means splitting one track into two. This is accomplished with a "mult" ...Duh . Three or more points on a patch bay that are wired in parallel. By plugging the signal into the first point you can then patch it out to two places.

Hope that helped

Re: opening recording studio

I'm not sure where you got the 100-250 range for mid level recording in NYC but it is wholely in-accurate.Right now the market is extremely depressed in New York. You have some nice gear but studios with capital investments far greater than yours are all vying for projects in that price range. I'm s...

Re: MP3s-Are they changing the way we hear???

We as engineers have been LO Fi-ing things for years. That is one thing... It is intentional and thought out. But to have a substandard medium passed off as standard to the unknowing is criminal.... And then to charge money for it as well? You want 99 cents - give me SDII OK?[/quote]
