No idea how other people's 16x24 rooms sound. It wasn't a purely scientific survey- just a Google search. It certainly looked like they knew what they were doing. Hah! For years I've been working with a 10'x10'x8' spare bedroom, so I figured 16x24 would be a dream. Yes, the barn style roof! That's w...

Thanks for the references. I did a little reading last night, including playing with a room mode calculator linked from GS. Out of curiosity I also searched for studios with a 16x24 tracking room, and surprisingly found quite a few. The gambrel roof doesn't have any parallel surfaces to the floor- i...

No idea. :/ Just trying to make it easy to build.

Actual ceiling height will be 12 or 14' at the peak.

Gable vs Gambrel ceiling - no drop

Hi all. I'm finally at a point (and need) to construct a detached room behind my house. It will serve as my office and music room. I'm wondering how these two types of ceilings will affect the acoustics of the room. The inside space will be 24x16' with 8' walls. I was initially planning a gambrel st...

Once again, Tape Op is the cure

I brought the last two issues of Tape Op with me on my trip to San Francisco this week. It's been a while since I picked it up and I suppose guilt had gotten the better of me. After running late to the airport, getting delayed at check in, and only to find out that once I ran up to the gate my first...

I've written emails to a few of the shops. The only one so far who has been keeping in touch is Starving Musician. I may even get a full free day out here so I may get to hit a few of them. I may go to Ameoba, but I'm trying not to. I know that if I go, I'll blow all the money I want to spend on a g...

[quote="adadan"He tends more towards the better quality Harmony, Kay, Silvertone, etc., and older, small amps than your Mustang/Strat kind of thing, but you never know what he'll have in the shop.[/quote] I own an old Harmony guitar. I think it's one of their cheaper models, but the neck is one of m...

asmara, I did a quick search for Rocker Guitars. Reviews seem really great. I do hope they have a decent used section. I probably can't spend more than $400 or so, and figured used I could get a little more for my money. A lot of the reviews said they stocked top line guitars. Not a bad thing, mind ...

San Francisco Music Shops

I'm heading back to SF for work this week, and I'd really love to check out some used guitars. I'm looking for an electric. I'm kind of in the mood for something strat or mustang like. I already have a LP copy I really enjoy. The only shop on my list so far is the Starving Musician because I've hear...

I've used AVG for many years. Love it. When friends come to me with PC probs, that's usually the first thing I install on their machine and it fixes most of the problems. Common sense is still important. I like Open Office as a replacement for MS Office suite. I have the real Office software on my w...

A good rundown from Jim. Thanks for that! I've used a Presonus Firebox for a few years now. It has been perfect for what I do at home. Limited to recording 4 tracks at once, unless I use the SPDIF to gain an extra 2. If I were to go up to an 8ch interface, I'd probably try to get a really nice A/D/A...

I just bought a new laptop for taking with me on the road (work). I really, really wanted it to come with XP, but I didn't have the option. I went with Vista Home Premium 32bit, and after a week I haven't had a single problem. The pop up windows asking for permission were about my only complaint, so...
