Thanks for the replies. It's good to hear positive things about RMG. I feel like this is one thing in my life that my purchasing decisions could actually have some effect on the world. I've gotten the sense too that quantegy is not to be trusted. Today I tried the phone numbers given on the twitter ...

RMGI vs ATR vs Quantegy-Ethical question?

Hello, sorry if I missed it but I don't see a 2012 discussion about different tape manufacturers. I feel like I should support ATR since they are family owned and seem to be in it for the love, and they are in the US. Still, it's more expensive (im using 2") (also I've not used a +9 tape before). An...

Hi there, I was in a similar position. I have one that was lacking low end, then I used one at another studio and it had amazing low end, below 75hz... Turns out these mics commonly need repair, something about the capsule getting dirty or stiff. With guidance from this thread http://www.groupdiy.co...

it's totally possible. i ended up with a sound i was happy with, i just noticed it seemed to be more work than in the past.

i was just curious if anyone else has notice digital being less forgiving than tape in terms of overhead phase issues...

More OH phase issues in digital vs tape?

Hello... I recently made a record where all the drums were tracked to pro tools due to a certain 2" tape machine being down. This is the first time I've done that, I've always recorded to 2" before, at least the drums. Anyhow, I've noticed a lot more issues with my overheads being out of phase, it s...

also, ampex m1200's, and pretty much any studer 2" is a great mahcine, so it's more about finding a good deal on one that is in good condition, good heads, etc... mci's are similar to ampex as well... studer's are generally more expensive but better built, if you can find one in good condition you c...

just stumbled on this message but i always feel the need to defend the ampex mm1200 and 2" machines in general. i've been running a 1200 for several years now and it gives me a problem once in a while that requires servicing from a tech, other than that it is pretty reliable and really the maintenan...

thanks for the link. i suppose i have an aversion to the word behringer, shallow as it might be. it just illustrates how maddening making this decision is; some people make it seem like getting anything less than apogee is a total waste, some people say behringer is not so bad. hmmm.

another converter question please have pity

I'm sure this question is posted a lot so if someone wants to point me to a previous thread that is relevant I'd be happy to go that way. Anyhow, I am new to computer world, I have been running my studio purely analog (2" 16 track ampex mm1200) for years and finally am breaking down so I can mix som...

Nick your reply was the type I was hoping for in the first place, to justify putting the money I would have spent in another mixing engineer into my own place... (I keep thinking about a new console at 600+ a day)... But yes it's about the record itself, and what is best for it. Since I posted this ...

I think Fletcher has a good point, I should let someone mix one song and see if it blows my mind. And I may be wrong about the $300 a day for the mixer, maybe that was a bro deal my friend got, I'll have to see... About the music, I'll just say that my ideal mix would sound like T-rex, but a little ...

Oh thanks Tony. Yes, the producer with the "Name" would be $300 a day and $300 for the Neve room.... I guess I was naive about what other people charge for thier studios... It sounded like a lot to me...
