I answered Yes. Recording music is my primary source of income. However, I am not making a living from it. Six years in and I made it work in my bachelor days of roommates and living off free day-old bread, but now I seem to be at the end of the rope. The rent is due in a few days and I just have en...

Trading work for points on a record

I recently started up a small studio with a partner. He owns the space & handles booking. I provide the gear & the ears. He's also an independent professional recording artist. We started working on material for his new album. He's my bro, so I just started working without any sort of payment arrang...

A lot of it was collaboration. We would write a few basic parts of the music together, then I would elaborate it and make it a full track. Should I mess with copyrighting those, or just only the few that I did by myself?

Thanks for bringing that to my awareness Nick. Those few words go a long way.

Gregg, I did not sign a work-for-hire contract yet. I have most of what I've done backed up. Copyright paperwork has not been filed yet. He's not from the Thunder. I've actually known this guy for five years now, and he's always been cool. Everything changed when he got this manager, that I think he...

Personal engineer followup/rant/lesson

Some of you may remember a post a made a while back about working as a personal engineer for a high-profile athlete ( prev topic ). I got lots of great feedback from fellow tapeopers. I say a lot of this from a negative perspective, but I still love recording and making music. I've met and worked wi...

First off, thank you very much for the responses everyone. We just kind of hung out and mostly shot the shit since it's been a while. His lawyer will be emailing me a draft of a contract this week. I have a lawyer for myself in mind. We talked about me getting a cut on royalties, which he has no pro...

Personal Engineer

Tomorrow night I'm meeting with a certain celebrity athlete. He wants to hire me as a full-time audio engineer. My job will be to mix, record, write rap beats and be available to travel during season/training. His will pay for all travel and accommodations, a mobile rig and 60k/year. As you can gues...

I got a B.M., then started interning at a studio. The owner asked me a simple question that changed my whole perspective. "If you had a million dollars; in other words, you didn't have to worry about money, what would you do?" "Well, I don't have a million dollars, so that doesn't matter." I brewed ...

I didn't explain myself clearly. I have two separate systems. I'm not interested in migrating anything. I have a newer desktop and an older laptop. I'm replacing the HD in the laptop 'cause it's approaching 6 years old. I want to clone the old drive that's already in there so all I have to do is swa...

cloning drives

I have a '05 Powerbook ready for a new drive. I have a lot of stuff on it, and I want to clone it to make life easier. Would this work? 1)Use carbon copy cloner to clone the internal onto an external drive 2)hook the external up to my newer mac 3)install the new drive in my laptop 4)hook up the lapt...

Hey everyone, thanks for the ideas and responses to my vague question! I'm mainly a recording/mixing engineer and composer. I do lots of editing, sequencing, DSP, ITB mixing and online file transfers, so a laptop is essential. I worked in a commercial studio & music TV network for 3 years before mov...

The Nomad's rig

Let's say you wanted to live out of a backpack, or maybe a backpack and suitcase. Not more than you could take on a flight without checking luggage. You want to be able to work anywhere you decide to sit down. So, what are you packin' gear-wise? Obviously a laptop, but what else would go along with ...

I'm in nearly the same boat as the OP. Seeing a girl who lives in St. Paul and I'm strongly considering relocating there next August. I was an in-house engineer and did production & post-production for a TV network for 3 years before leaving to take care of my grandma out in the country. There are v...
