I don't know about a whole board, but when I racked my PM1000's (4 channels in one case) I just used the 44v for the phantom supply. There might be some devices out there that won't work at 44v, I suppose, but as far as I know it's not a problem. The lower voltages could be arrived at using a voltag...

I agree with Tony's advice about parallel compression. You can even set up an aggressive parallel comp/limiter, then blend the tracks and send that whole mix into another compressor set to ride things a little more. Another thing to try, if you have the option, is some sort of tape saturation plug. ...

Doing the 'free recording' thing is a bit tricky. One way to do it without sounding desperate is to say" Hey I acquired this new piece of gear, or want to try this new technique. I need a great band to experiment with, and I really dig your music. Would you be interested in helping me out? You get a...

Any possibility of tracking upstairs? Basements and untreated garages are tough spots to record. Not impossible, but for drums in particular, you'll do much better if you can temporarily set up in the living room, especially if it has higher ceilings. Acoustic instruments are going to benefit from a...

New Mix-Off - Tracks Uploaded - Classic Rock Vibe
Last night I set-up a new mix off, with tracks from a willing band I recorded a few months back. The song is in a early 70's kind of vibe, guitar, organ, pedal steel, drums, bass, vox. The discussion is at the new mixoff.org site: http://mixoff.org/index.php/topic,11.0.html You can read about the tr...

Another old punk-rock era trick was to get a $5 stamp made, and use an ink that dries on the shells you're using. Might take some experimentation, but some kind of acrylic might work. It'll look a little sloppy, but isn't that the idea? Something handmade, to add value and 'touch'? If you're going f...
