Re: Subwoofer placement - is there a "right way"?
I'd like to add in as a corollary--is there a WRONG way? Because I'm having a hell of a time managing the low end in my mixing room, and I'm not sure why.

Re: Lost in the wilds of lo/mid-fi -- your thoughts please.
What gear are you recording with? (Hopefully I didn't miss a huge post answering this question before I asked it.) I've always taken the approach of trying to get things so that when I *do* make mistakes, they're the kind of mistakes people aren't expecting, so they either won't notice them or will ...

Re: Overdrive pedals educate me
I use an AC-15 for my main guitar amp. It's an older, British 2 x10 , so things might break up a little quicker, but I think the principles remain the same. I've had a lot of success getting an overdriven sound by pushing the gain on the way in. I normally use a Charlie Stringer Very-Tone Dawg. Not ...

Re: Who has used Ramsa boards?
I'm still using that Ramsa WR-S 4412 that I got about a zillion years ago. I still totally love it. I'm running a 16-track now so it gets a little weird sometimes trying to make it all fit. If I had a WR-S 4416 or 4424 (16 or 24 channel version respectively) life would probably be a lot easier. But ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I pulled a sweet Leslie-style baffle out of an old solid-state organ I found on the curb.
Haven't done anything with it.
Yet.

Fads, by their very nature, are inherently fickle. But I've noticed that one thing which definitely drives a fad is how undervalued the equipment in question is. There's TONS of gear out there that I love to death at my price point, which became utterly unappealing (if I didn't already own it) once ...

I've been using a 424 Mk. II and a 424 Mk. III almost daily for the last few weeks. Having a riot. But I was considering doing this very thing (only with a 40-4), and I've come to the conclusion that it's not as great an idea as it seems on the surface. The mixer section is incredibly versatile for ...

As it happens, I've been using a 424 Mk. II and Mk. II (one of each) almost daily for the last few months, doing some forensic work on my 4-track cassettes. I'm trying to re-claim some material that I gave up on about 20 years ago, that really should have seen the light of day. I'm trying to use the...

I scored a pair of these at a musician's flea market a few years ago. Just got them out for the second time tonight. They're fantastic mics for something, I just haven't figured out what yet. We used them at band practice to demo a song to cassette, which for us--for the moment--is still the most co...

Haven't heard too much in this thread about this technique, but it worked super-well for me the one time I tried it. I think a couple of youse guys was talking about it in principle, anyway.

WOW. That's a switch all right. I've tried several times to use computers to make music, but I just can't seem to make it... do... the things. Maybe I'm just living in the past, I dunno. But that's probably another factor in the thinning of the crowd--computer-based technologies aren't as... arcane,...

Y'know, something else I just thought of is that with everything becoming more specialized, it's a lot harder to maintain focus on one individual board. For instance, back in the day if I was messing around with a guitar I might post about it here. But now there's TDPRI or whatever that I could post...

One thing I really like about the TOMB... it really feels like we're all pulling together, so to speak. It seems like even when people are asking a kinda stupid question, there's usually someone who can help them out--either by giving them an answer, or by trying to help them refine their question t...
