Re: What's your favorite instrument to record?

bass guitar - i just like filling out the low frequencies and hearing the track begin to coalesce into something musical from which to build on.

Re: Expanding my mic palette

A large-diaphragm condenser would be a good addition to your collection. You could use it on vocals, guitar, percussion, and pretty much anything else. MXL makes some decent mics that are very affordable. The Shure KSM27 isnt bad, though it might be a little more than youre looking to spend. As far ...

Re: BEST $100 snare mic (for recording)

If you want to go really cheap, you could always go with a Realistic (Radio Shaq) dynamic mic. Im not saying it will sound good, but it might. It was my go-to mic for a while, before I had money. I miss the thin, stale response it provided. But it actually didnt sound so bad on snare.

Re: Equipment you HATE but everyone else seems to LOVE

This thread seems to have been a cathartic experience for many of us. I didnt realize hatred of gear would arouse such passion, but I suppose I should have assumed as much. Wow, I guess to each his own. I like my Blueberry, its great on guitar amps and doesn't sound too bad on my voice (which ain't ...

Re: Cheap Cans: MoreMe's or HD202's?

Just got a pair of MoreMe's cus Ive heard good things and theyre very cheap. The cord isnt very long and they're a bit uncomfortable, but they're good for tracking. You should probably buy one pair, see how you like it then get the rest if it works out. Theyre dirt cheap.

Re: I have to do a metal project.

The thing Ive noticed with metal bands and the people in them is that they tend to have very passionate opinions on the various subgenres of "metal" and how the characteristics of those subgenres relate to their music. They often view themselves as coming from one camp and might demonstrate an avers...

Re: How much is enough ($)?

I think project rates are a good way to start out. Just be sure to keep the amount of time you spend on it within reason and let the bands know that and hope they respect that. Id say you should adjust your rates (in the future) on how the bands react to the final product. If they are really impress...

Re: i don't understand compression, dammit

Mic technique is somewhat important. Apparently there are singers who are so good with it they need little or no compression on takes, but you can get by just keeping things reasonably consistent during tracking then process it later. Mic technique may not be your problem though. Ive never used that...

Re: i don't understand compression, dammit

I am by no means an expert, but in my experience it does take some practice or at least some experimentation to find out how to best use compression. If your vocal take has extreme dynamic range, sometimes compression alone wont do the job. Make sure you or your singer isnt moving far away from the ...

Equipment you HATE but everyone else seems to LOVE

Well not exactly hate, just something you don't feel as positively about as most do. The BLUE Blueberry. I just dont like it as a vocal mic. Ive used it on myself as well as tried/used it on pretty much anyone who's come in to record vox. It just seems too mushy to me. Ive gotten some use out of it ...

Re: (Whatever works) Equipment you love but evreyone else ha

I found the C1000s to be pretty nice on acoustic, at least on a few of my acoustics. I didnt like them much for overheads though. Funny that's the exact opposite of how I feel about my SM81s which I got to replace the C1000s.

Ive heard some good things about SIR. But it also looks kind of unnecessarily complicated. Also, the ram situation could be a problem for me. Anyone else have some thoughts?

ny idiot can post something here (not insinuating Joel is an idiot by any stretch, though), and someone can pull that out and say "Tape Op Board says...". Why not just have some corporate clown from Behringer sign up on the board, post some great reviews about their new $12 la2a clone or something,...

Reverbs: soft vs. hard

Hi. Since I only have the ability to record in a "dead" room, Id like to have some good reverb processing at my disposal. Currently Im using the "D-verb" on ProTools, which really doesnt sound very good, imho. Im wondering what youve had good experiences with, and whether youd recommend a plug-in or...
