Re: Purple Audio

I bought an mc77 recently which sounds great. The "input" pot is a little scratchy, so I emailed Andrew about it. He got back to me within half an hour telling me to send it back for a fix, that he would pay all postage and it would only be in his shop for two days max before it was mailed back. See...

About 22 years, with a five year hiatus in there somewhere.

Re: Royer 121 / Ribbon ???'s

The 121 takes eq relatively well.

I use it mainly for moderate volume electric guitar cabs. I love it for that. Sometimes I'll use it with a 57 and blend them.

I'd like to try using it on saxophones and clarinets...next time I get a chance to I will....

Good luck,

Re: Modern Computer Cassette Tape Deck...

I'd rather use a good tape deck-->good a/d coverters (something, BTW, which I've been meaning to do for the last five years...back up all my cassette rough mixes etc).

Re: travelling with gear

Gear is shipped all over, all the time. If I wanted to spend the money, I could rent a fairchild 660 on the east coast and have it next day here in SF. My point is: pack it professionally and ship the gear fully insured to the studio via UPS. Or you get a really serious road rack with shocks, and wr...

This is amazing stuff. Lot's of homemade gear! I have no interest in promoting them aside from admiration.

Check it out.

alot of people think the purple mc76/77 is closer to the original than the universal reissues.

I was wondering that too. I mean, the playing sounds great to me, but just how would you know?

Re: Any reason not to crank your mic pre input gain?

Some preamps have a good, usable sound when they are driven really hard. The chandler tg pres for instance. I've heard of people (geoff emerrick) overdriving v72s, but I've never had the balls to do it myself. I have a couple pres that sound like corpse fluid when overdriven. Bottom line is try it a...

Re: Just Some Tom Waits stuff

Me and tony and some pals have a band that only exists in the studio (for now) called "the book of knots." One of the songs on our new record has Tom Waits singing on it, and I prepared the masters to ship to him today, actually. I am just glad he is going to be on our new record, which also featur...

these are from in thru the out door. i'm pretty sure it's headphone bleed you hear, aside from bonzo's trademark grunting as he beats his drums into scones with his baseball bat sticks. if you want to use these tracks legally get a good lawyer and have a lot of money...and good luck. simply amazing ...

Re: How close to the real thing do UAD-1 Plug-In's sound?

It doesn't sound exactly like the real thing if you a/b them. It is useful though and the gui is like the real thing making it intuitive to use. If you want the real thing, get the real thing.

Re: TL-Audio M-3 Mixer.

Oh man, them Chandler Limited MiniTG mixers sure seem cool. http://www.chandlerlimited.com/products/minitgrackmixer.php But damn, around $5k ??? Is there anything 'affordable' (under $2k) that is analog, sounds good, great EQ.. Etc... 8 channels w/ a 2 buss would be fine. I'm guessing I'm go with s...

Re: TL-Audio M-3 Mixer.

All the old TL audio gear was hybrid. No idea what is happpening now, but I would inspect the circuit topology before you go and get excited about a tube mic pre. all their old "tube mic pre's" used an IC opamp for gain with a tube in for color... NO! NOT all of there gear is hybrid. They have been...

Re: NOS Tubes vs. New Stock

Totally depends on the pre, the mic or the amplifier you are putting the tube into; and it depends on the NOS tube (eg, is it up to speck?).
