Need some mixing suggestions/critiques

Here are two tracks that I'm mixing. I'd love some feedback and tips. http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=F98DC0737C9B4C17 http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=F5DEBB834D13A535 The tracks were recorded live in a living room. The band leader wanted bleed s...

Re: The eleven worst songs of 2004

I was going to defend the new U2 album (except the L2 limiter) but then I realized that the link was The Best Page in the Universe. I don't care if they made fun of my mom, that website is funny as hell. If you've only visited the above links, you're not going to "get it." Go to the home page: http:...

Re: Need suggestions for studio drum kit

I mentioned the exports as an example... I've heard good tracks done with those, that's all. He's looking at Stage Customs, so I assumed a sub-$1000 kit would be an option. They really aren't THAT bad! In fact, I know many professionals that use them for gigging kits. As for the parts on Ludwig Stan...

Re: Need suggestions for studio drum kit

do vintage kits really sound different than modern ones? Yes, because they are made differently now. Older kits generally had "reenforcement rings" on the inner side, at each end. They made the shell less suseptable to warpage, and also added more mass at the bearing edge. The bearing edge is the a...

Re: Need suggestions for studio drum kit

One more thing, if vintage sounds appealing. The steal of the vintage drum market is the Ludwig Standard kits. These were made in the late 60s and early 70s with "strata" finishes... kind of like the Ringo finish with different colors. These were "student" model drumsets from Ludwig. However, the sh...

Re: Need suggestions for studio drum kit

As a drum shop employee, I can safely say that all the major companies are very competitive. You can buy a kit from Yamaha, Tama, DW/Pacific, Gretsch, Ludwig, Peal and even Mapex and you'll be happy. Just as long as you're getting something in the same "price point." You can find a lot of "budget" m...

Re: Audix mic for bass drum

I managed to borrow a D6 and an i5 from work. Here's a sample: http://www.citizenkeith.com/samples/test16.mp3 OH - Rode NT5 pair Kick - D6 Snare - i5 Floor - AKG D880 Considering that I don't want a modern style, I sure had the wrong bass drum heads on. The Aquarian Super Kick and Regulator heads al...

Re: No EQ

Hi Joel,

How about compression? Did you slam 'em or did you let things breathe? What do you expect from the mastering engineer?

I love RE20s. When I get some paid work (i.e. not my band) I'll have to pick one up! :)

Re: Audix mic for bass drum

Sure, D12 would be nice if I had the money. But since I'm getting a super good deal on Audix mics, I'd like to try one out.

Re: Audix mic for bass drum

Thanks for all the feedback.. Can any of you get into specifics? I don't like that modern scooped sound. I'm more of a vintage guy, I suppose, though nothing specific comes to mind aside from the variety of drum sounds you'll hear on records by the Beatles, the Doors, CCR, and the Kinks (when you ca...

Audix mic for bass drum

I have a D112 and I hate it. It always sounds the same, and it's not a sound I dig. More often than not, I'll put my AT4050 on the kick (no hole in my bass drum), but would prefer to use that elsewhere during the session. I work at a drum shop that just became an Audix dealer, and I can get them pre...

Re: The meaning behind your band/name

My band is Orchestraville, named after the children's record called "Rusty in Orchestraville." http://www.kiddierekordking.com/Rusty%20In%20Orchestraville,%20CAPITOL%20%20DCN-115_%20Henry%20Blair,%201946sm.jpg I was in a band called Wind-Up Funny Action!
