multiple monitor placement?

I currently have 2 sets of mid-size monitors set up in my studio: Mackie HR824mk2 and NS10s. problem 1) I think the Mackies sound best 1.5 ~ 2 ft further away than do the NS10s. If I put them in the ideal equilateral triangle they will be directly behind the NS10s. If I place them further away but t...

So why do mastering engineers use stereo monitors that extend to the lowest end of the audible spectrum?

My idea is to have them in stereo, as "ad hoc" LF components of the main monitors.

effectively 1 small 2-way monitor + 1 10" subwoofer = 1 3-way monitor.

Taking the caveat that proper adjustment of level and crossover settings would be essential as a given, is there an error in my logic?

per Nick's post: They have volume controls don't they? I would plan on finding volume settings that, when combined, work in the room.

per vvv's post: It sounds like you are employing the same concept as I am proposing. I'm glad to hear it's working.

So the count is 1 and 1.

dual-subwoofer monitor setup?

I am wanting to improve the LF extension in my monitoring set-up. Since PMC IB2S are out of my range [ 8~) ] I am looking for a less expensive alternative. The KRK 10-3 has a nice feature set, but it is from their lower-level Rokit series. There seem to be a dearth of choices between the "entry-leve...

pair of Urei 537 graphic EQs as is LA area - make offer

I have a pair of Urei 537 graphic EQs. One works fine, one has some hum and probably needs new filter caps. Quite a few of the slider caps are missing but all the sliders work fine. Make me an offer!

Determining per-song rate for mixing

I have a project that I have tracked and am mixing at my studio for a client. So far I have been charging an hourly rate, but I am wondering if a per-song rate for the mixes would be more appropriate. I am referring to time I spend by myself in the studio, not time where the client is present. I thi...

question about coaxial monitor design

In looking at coaxial monitors with horn tweeters, such as the Presonus Scepter S8 and the Equator Q8 it looks to me like the horn would cause interference, for want of a better term, in the low frequencies with the sound waves bouncing off the back of the horn and also the horn blocking a lot of th...

Single coils will hum. You could try stacked pickups, but they do sound slightly different than true single coils.

You don't say what kind of guitar or form factor pickups. Strat style? P-90 style. Several companies make stacked strat pickups and stacked P-90s. I am a fan of Seymour Duncan products.

Any leads on an "affordable" mic to use for room measurements?

I have two omni mics available: a Pearlman dp1 with a cardioid-omni switch, and a modded Oktava MK-012 with an omni capsule. I have doubts as to how flat either of them are.

Also, when mixing, I HIGHLY recommend choosing one or two calibrated levels, I use 72 dB and 82 dB (the optimal), and do not deviate from that during mixing. Your testing should be done with 82 dB level at the mix position. Place your measuring microphone right where your head is during mixing for ...
