Thanks for all the ideas. I think I managed to get the track I was working on to happen via a combination of a comping a couple of takes (to avoid the click-iest bits), and a little bit of EQ help on the top end. Since things were moving quickly, I just tried a few mic angles and went for it... usin...

recording accordion

Quick question: when recording accordion, does anyone have any recommendations on how to avoid capturing excessive key click noises? (Standard musician jokes about "make sure the accordion isn't being played" don't count, here.) I've tried a few things with dynamic mics and am getting totally hit an...

Though I'm obligated to point out that I don't see any bass traps in there.... ;-) That's because there weren't at the time those pictures were taken, last fall. :) I've got some trapping in the vertical corners now, and while it could use some more, that seemed to cover the basics (no obvious bass...

Oh, and as for pictures - these are of the inside, when it was being finished (so various items like corner bass traps and the drum riser aren't shown, since I hadn't built them yet. Also the ceiling is still taped from painting!). The roof gets a little low at the sides, so rather than rebuild the ...

So after talking to some studio people I know here in town, and spending last night poring through Rod's book, I think I understand what's going on with my current "pretty good but not as good as I hoped" doors: the main outer pair of doors has a fair amount of mass but nowhere near what a design li...

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I do like the idea of keeping the big doors if possible - loading big stuff in and out is really, really convenient that way, and it also means at some unforeseeable point in the future it could potentially still be used as a garage. :) I'm still thinking that the d...

Thanks, JWL. I can post pics of the actual doors when I'm near them with a camera. Here's a quick not-to-scale plan of the room - all outer walls are stone exterior over a wood shell over insulated studs over a multilayer drywall sandwich: http://undertheradar.org/studio-floorplan.gif The current ou...

Big Doors

Hi all - after years of planning and plotting, and a lot of work, what used to be a 20' x 20' detached stone-walled garage in my backyard is now a rehearsal/small home project studio space. Overall, I'm really happy with how it's turned out - a bigger post with pictures will be coming! - with one ca...

Thanks, Jeff. I hadn't heard of any such critters that I was aware of... but if they exist, I figured someone here would know... :)

(I'd think they should exist, but since so many people I work with - and apparently most of the planet - are all about softsynths these days, maybe not...)

usb/midi question - without a computer?

Hi all - I'm not having much luck searching for this, so hopefully someone here has either done this or can answer that I'm delusional and it can't be done: I'm looking at a scenario where I might be needing to use an external controller with a Novation Xiosynth, which has USB MIDI in/out but has a ...

For what it's worth, I have a kit of '70s slingerlands that everyone who comes over absolutely loves. The tom heads - remo coated emperor batter heads, top and bottom - are at least 10 years old that I can vouch for, and knowing the drummer I bought the kit from, are guaranteed to be older than that...

don't you hate it when....

So, last night I was helping out some friends by recording a small show (pre-festival warmup show), and would up "getting" to run the PA as well at the last minute. Which was fine - except that when we started I was getting a lot of hellacious low boom and high shriek feedback in the room. I swapped...

I'm currently using a late-2008 MacBook Pro - 15" screen, 2.4GHz Core Duo, 2GB memory. I've been using Logic since v5; with Logic 8 I easily get 48 tracks with a good number of plugins, and could certainly go further but that's as far as I've had any reason to use. I basically use the computer as a ...

i took to using it to direct edit the track in question to a new track. keep the old one in case something goes wrong or you change your mind about the settings later on. I was just using Logic's Freeze Track feature to do more or less that same thing with this plug. :) I often do that with any CPU...

Thanks for the replies! I've now downloaded the iZotope RX demo, and the declicker seems to take out 90% of the pops I was hearing. (It seems that it can be a bit CPU hungry, though, if the threshold is set too low. Then again, with the threshold too low it's also busy chewing up the whole au...
