I sounds like you have a reversed connection. I have built a bunch of these and had to trouble shoot a friends recently with the same problem you might have the pins on one side of your power supply swapped. It is easy to do. The 421 is awesome if you don't want the nasal 57 sound...
You might check into the the MD504 or whatever the current one is, it is really great too.

The guitars for the most part were played through Krank amlifiers, they are a new company from Tempe, AZ. Lots of low end. I like the percussion and the clean guitar tone. Is everytihing recorded with the Octava? The tones are nice. Should be in a Wes Anderson movie.
