Re: I hate to admit it: I don't understand sidechains.

Yeah, I'd have to say on the live portishead album, it sounds live a huge reverb with about 150msec of pre delay as my buddy Cman suggests in a previous post. As for all this sidechain bs ;) I don't know about you guys...but I sum the drums and bass to a 2 channel comp, no sidechains, bells or whisl...

Re: Picking a pre to build... Advice? (SCA)

my first preamp was a home made 2 ch. neve 3415; I still use it today on vocals and bass DI like it's goin out of style. I bought three of the modules at sonnic circus, gave one to my buddy and had him in return rack 2 of them with stepped gain, rotary output fader, and facility for 48v. This only c...

Re: Condensor Kick Drum

The most widley used set up I see and use sometimes for kick is this. MD421 inside the kick, and a U47 Fet outside the kick. Sometimes blended to one track or just isolated to seperate tracks. The problem is that you must isolate the rest of the drum set from the Fet47 or ELSE!!!!! Packing blankets ...

Re: What kind of drum skins are you using?

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION: For me it's all about tone and charecture. A lil' birdie in a tree told me once that the thinner the head, the more resonance can be achieved. Now I know most ppl like that tight, tapped up close mic tom sound, hence all these heavy double layer G2 evans and REMO EMPEROR seri...

Re: live remote mix help

for your consideration: rent a three way mic splitter; hire a music mixer who can get a great sound on the fly and can roll with any situation. The splitter will feed FOH(ISO), MONITORS(direct), and MUSIC MIX(ISO). That way you get what you want which is a good live recording. Over the past year I h...

Re: otari mx5050 8 track old tape slowing down

lol, I own a couple of MX5050 1/2" machines...I had a simmilar problem; I found that my pinch roller became contaminated, almost like a gummy bear. One screw removes it, and you can get a replacment part on the internet if you search on google. ez DEMAG FIRST. KEEP ALL PARTS OF THE TAPE PATH CLEAN...

Re: Preamps, different types of the same..

hell, all I have to say is that I'm hired to record basic tracks for all sorts of music. My preamp collection not only gives me my own unique sound, but my clients wouldn't have it any other way. Since 90% of the work I do is recorded to a DAW, I must not only deliver greats sounds, but quickly. Hav...

HOT MIC

I didn't listen to the mixes yet...but in reading your reply to the first gentlemans comments. "that's what we were hoping to hear" ??? I'd say if you already know you have distortion somewhere, don't wait for a guy from New Hampshire to tell you your vocal is low, distortion, etc. We all must do ou...

3415 Class A/B

yes, Class A is very much hyped...and by the way the neve 3415 is a class A/B line amp. My advice to anyone who wants to rack some into mic pres: Buy three modules, give one to your pet shop monkey, tell him he can keep one of the modules as long as he racks the other two up for you...this works, an...
