Re: Cheap Sleeper Fuzz Pedals for Guitar
Cheap sleeper fuzzes.... so many fun ones. You can't go wrong with any Fuzz Face style pedal, germanium or silicon even. It's the simplest two-transistor circuit and it sounds gargantuan and cleans up nicely when you roll your volume down. The cheapest version might be the Mosky Fuzzface (silicon) f...

Re: Cheap Sleeper Fuzz Pedals for Guitar
Also, the Behringer SF300 gets a lot of love under US$50 - I've not tried it. This was going to be my suggestion. It's a clone of the Boss HyperFuzz, which itself is switchable between two different transistor-based fuzzes AND a good clean boost mode. So the Behringer Superfuzz is their version of ...

Re: Is it safe to set a tape echo on its side?
I happened across a video showing repair/restoration of an oil can delay recently. Long story short, the can needs to be in a specific orientation to work. There's a fairly small puddle of oil in the bottom, not a can full of oil. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBSEQmYTLMY&t=4030s Uncle Doug is th...

Re: Is it safe to set a tape echo on its side?
I concur with this. I think an Echoplex will run fine on it's side, but I'm not sure the motor will be happiest that way. I always wonder this about Tel-Ray oil-can units. I have a few of them and I'm afraid to put them on their sides for some reason. I know that I've heard a difference in effect wh...

Re: New Barn Studio build out
Yep I understand keeping it comfortable, but looks-wise ..would be neat if it could stay looking like a barn. :) That's my ultimate plan. I want it to look and feel like a barn on the inside and plan to put up more wood over the inner sheetrock walls for aesthetic purposes/vibe, at least. This is g...

Re: Ampex AM-10 mixer mods
Which brings up a totally unrelated question. I have a pair of DBX 161s that I use unbalanced. Is it going to make a huge sonic difference if I put transformers in it and balance it? This should be another thread....digitaldrummer wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 6:03 amnote there is also the JT-123-DBX (for the DBX 160 series...)

Ampex AM-10 mixer mods
I have had a Ampex AM-10 mic mixer for 20+ years and while I have used it as a 2-channel mic pre in the past, using each of the stereo outputs, I would like to wire it up more permanently to use as individual mic preamps. Schematic of the preamp here: http://www.davegroupjapan.com/am10-2.gif If I ta...

Re: New Barn Studio build out
Yeah, it's reflective, but probably no worse than untreated sheetrock so it's not replacing acoustic treatment. You mean just leaving this stuff exposed on the outside and not putting sheetrock over it? My ultimate plan is to cover the inner walls with hardwood for whatever sonic character I can ge...

Re: New Barn Studio build out
Thats an awesome place. I wouldn't do a thing ! ! .. ever hear the album "Harvest" ? Thank you, but I'm not sure Harvest was done in February in New England. I might want to insulate the walls a bit. Ha! That's probably going to be the biggest job - insulating and putting in an air gap, insulating ...

Re: RANT: "in your spare time.."
The challenge for me is squeezing in little small things (mix revisions, stems, etc) when my schedule gets busy - and I'm pretty firm on having specific days off and keeping to a 9 hour day. So I'm trying to build a bit more buffer into my month so there's a little margin for this extra stuff and i...

Re: RANT: "in your spare time.."
The mastering version of this is "Hey that master you did sounds awesome, I made a couple tweaks to the mix, if you could just run this new one with the same settings that'd be great, thanks!" As if I can just snap my fingers and make it so. New mix? New master. From scratch. That's how it is. Roger

Re: New Barn Studio build out
Thank you Mike! I will look into that Mitsubishi setup. My neighbors are right behind me, my house is nearby and other neighbors too, so a bit of soundproofing/minimizing is necessary. Luckily all of my neighbors so far have been super cool and think it's a fine idea to get the studio up and running...
